The difference is that the multinational Nissan treats what happened as a suspension, and not a definitive closure of production in Brazil, like Ford.

After the departure of the automaker Ford from Brazil and the stoppage of Chevrolet, Honda, Audi (Volkswagen), Scania, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, the Japanese Nissan's turn has come to suspend vehicle production and the automotive industry may collapse in the country. After Ford leaves Brazil and stops production of cars in Bahia, Camaçari is experiencing the 'dismantling' of factories and 7,5 people are expected to lose their jobs

The suspension of vehicle production in Brazil at the Nissan factory is due to the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic. The information was released last Thursday (25).

The measure affects the automaker's plant in Resende, in Rio de Janeiro. Production will be stopped between March 26th and April 9th. Activities would resume on the following Monday, the 12th.

According to the multinational Nissan, the initiative was taken "Aiming to guarantee the safety of its employees as part of the effort to reduce the impact of the pandemic, adapt the company to the current scenario of challenges faced by the automotive sector and guarantee the continuity of the business, Nissan decided to adopt collective vacations in its Industrial Complex of Resende from March 26 to April 9. As a result, production will resume on April 12,” says the company.

Nissan is the seventh assembler to paralyze production in the country because of the worsening pandemic, along with Chevrolet, Honda, Audi (Volkswagen), Scania, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz has determined that the factories in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and Juiz de Fora (MG) must suspend production between March 26 and April 5.

Volkswagen announced on March 19 that it would suspend vehicle production in Brazil between March 24 and April 4. There are four factories affected: São Bernardo do Campo (SP), Taubaté (SP), São Carlos (SP) and São José dos Pinhais (PR). The German automaker said that only essential activities would be maintained at the factories and employees in the administrative areas would continue to work remotely.

Last Friday, Volvo announced that by the end of this month it would drastically reduce production at the Curitiba factory, in Paraná, also due to a lack of parts and the worsening of the pandemic.

Already Scania will stop production in São Bernardo do Campo from March 26th, with a return scheduled for April 5th. The company recalls that it was the first automaker to return to work in April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, with the “production system adapted to the strictest health and sanitary hygiene protocols”.

The multinational Honda decreed the stoppage of work at its factory in Sumaré (SP) in the first 10 days of March.

Chevrolet had to interrupt the activities of its assembly line in Gravataí (RS), where the Chevrolet Onix is produced, and will stay for at least a month with production suspended – the resumption still has an uncertain date.

Honda and Chevrolet face similar problems due to the shortage of electrical components available in the global market, industries that depend on these raw materials to manufacture their products are no longer able to produce their goods in sufficient quantity.
