Porto do Açu receives mega investment from a Norwegian company to develop a green hydrogen production hub.
Norway is about to take a big leap forward in the renewable energy sector, focusing on an ambitious green hydrogen project in Brazil. The Norwegian company Fuella, with the support of Allianz Capital Partners, secured a strategic area within Porto do Açu, in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro, to develop a green hydrogen production hub.
This mega investment comes at a crucial moment, shortly after Brazil approved a legal framework aimed at attracting investment in the production of low-carbon hydrogen, consolidating itself as one of the leading nations in the global energy transition.
Norwegian mega investment in Brazil promises lots of jobs
Norway's interest in Porto do Açu is not casual. The Scandinavian country, known for its leadership in renewable energy, is keeping an eye on the opportunities that Brazil offers, especially after the creation of a regulatory framework that facilitates and encourages the development of green hydrogen projects.

Fuella, which has the support of Allianz Capital Partners – one of the largest global insurance companies – sees Brazil as fertile ground to expand its operations and lead the green hydrogen revolution in Latin America.
Mauro Andrade, executive director of business development at Prumo Logística SA, the company that operates Porto do Açu, highlighted the importance of the abundance of renewable energy in Brazil as a key factor in the project's economic viability.
“You have cheap and abundant renewable energy,” said Andrade, pointing to the great potential for green hydrogen production in the country.
Norwegian Fuella plant in Porto do Açu will have a capacity of 520 MW
Green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, without the emission of greenhouse gases, is seen as the fuel of the future. Its demand tends to grow exponentially as the world progresses in the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.
Norway is positioned to be a leader in this market, using Brazil as a strategic base for large-scale production of this fuel.
The CEO of Plummet Logistics, Rogério Zampronha, revealed that the company plans to build a green ammonia plant in Porto do Açu, with a capacity of 520 MW, using the electrolysis process. This unit will have the potential to produce 400 thousand tons of green ammonia per year, which will be stored and transported through the Açu Liquids Terminal (TLA), with a focus on export.
Green ammonia, derived from green hydrogen, is one of the most promising products for export, due to its applicability in several industries, including fertilizers and sustainable fuels.
Açu Port as a green hydrogen hub
Porto do Açu, located in Rio de Janeiro, is consolidating itself as one of the main green hydrogen hubs in the world. The area destined for the development of green hydrogen projects, which covers 1 million square meters, is already in the process of being fully reserved, with Prumo Logística negotiating with other interested developers.
The choice of Porto do Açu is not only strategic due to its privileged geographic location, but also due to its robust infrastructure and already established transport routes. Fuella and its partners are committed to taking advantage of these advantages to create an efficient and sustainable supply chain that can serve both the domestic and export markets.
Impact of the project on industrial sectors
Norway's mega investment in green hydrogen in Brazil has the potential to transform industrial sectors that face major challenges in reducing their carbon emissions, known as “hard-to-slaughter”. Among the sectors that will benefit most are the steel industry, the fertilizer chain and the production of clean fuels, such as methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
These segments, which are responsible for a significant portion of global carbon emissions, find green hydrogen a viable solution to reduce their environmental impact. Rogério Zampronha, CEO of Prumo Logística, highlighted that “these hard-to-slaughter segments will inexorably need specific solutions such as the use of low-carbon hydrogen”. With the development of the project at Porto do Açu, Brazil will be able to position itself as a leading provider of sustainable solutions for these critical sectors.
Norway invests 'heavy' in clean and sustainable technologies
Norway has stood out as a country committed to the energy transition, investing heavily in clean and sustainable technologies. The green hydrogen project at Porto do Açu is further proof of this commitment, demonstrating the long-term vision of Fuella and its partners to create a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
By investing in Brazil, Norway not only strengthens its position in the global renewable energy market, but also contributes to the development of green infrastructure in Brazil, which could be replicated in other countries. The cooperation between Norway and Brazil on this project is an example of how international collaboration can accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, benefiting the environment and future generations.
Norway's mega investment in green hydrogen at Porto do Açu marks a new chapter in the construction industry and renewable energy in Brazil. With the support of giants such as Allianz Capital Partners, Fuella is positioned to lead the production of green hydrogen in Latin America, propelling Brazil to the forefront of the global energy transition.
