Rio de Janeiro hosts international nuclear energy seminar

O XIV International Seminar on Nuclear Energy (SIEN) begins its activities in Rio de Janeiro, discussing the vital importance of nuclear plants in combating the use of fossil fuels. Specialists from different areas will meet at the Society of Engineers and Architects of Rio de Janeiro (SEAERJ), in the Glória neighborhood, to debate more agile and economical nuclear constructions.

This event, which takes place from November 21st to 23rd, seeks to clarify doubts and combat prejudice about nuclear energy, considered a crucial ally in the search for sustainable energy sources. At the same time, the VI ENCOM (Nuclear Sector Communication Meeting) will also be held, followed by a technical visit to the Angra dos Reis Nuclear Power Plant.

The small modular reactor revolution

Paulo Maurício Senra, researcher at GESEL/UFRJ, will highlight the role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) on the first day of the seminar. SMRs represent a significant change in the design of nuclear power plants, offering modular solutions manufactured on assembly lines. This can result in a substantial reduction in costs and implementation time, compared to traditional plants, in addition to being non-emitting sources of greenhouse gases.

Important debates and renowned speakers

The seminar will feature discussions on various aspects of nuclear energy. Orpet Peixoto, president of INSC, will address the panorama of global nuclear energy. John Forman, from J. Forman Consultoria, will moderate a debate on construction costs and deadlines, with the participation of experts from Eletronuclear and EPE.

Safety, waste management and public acceptance of SMRs will be discussed by Niágara Rodrigues, from UFF. The opening of the event will feature Luís Fernando Paroli, CEO of ENBPAR.

Future of nuclear energy in Brazil

The second day of the seminar will focus on the future of Angra 3 and Angra 4, with the participation of João Pedro Leal, from SEENEMAR/RJ, and Marcelo Gomes, from Eletronuclear. Furthermore, national industry support for the Brazilian Nuclear Program will be a key topic, with the presence of leaders from ABIMAQ and ABEMI.

The last day of the event will question whether there has been progress in communication with society about the nuclear sector. Bernardo Mendes Barata, from ABEN, and other experts will discuss alternatives for disseminating knowledge in nuclear sciences, as well as security and transparency in the sector.

SIEN will take place in person and will also be broadcast online, with simultaneous translation, enabling global reach. Accreditation is available on the first day of the event, offering a unique opportunity for professionals and enthusiasts in the field of nuclear energy to update themselves and contribute to the debate about a more sustainable future that is less dependent on fossil fuels.
