Ocyan has been working to become increasingly diverse, with the aim of ensuring an inclusive work environment, free of discrimination.
Ocyan is proud to announce its first female Brazilian captain, Carla Malafaia, who took over the Norbe IX drillship in October. The company is increasingly seeking diversity, with equal opportunities prevailing for all people, regardless of any characteristics that make them unique. This Tuesday, the 22nd, the company sold a rig famous for operating flotels for OOS.
“I hoped one day to reach this level, it was my goal, but I have always worked without hurry”, said the commander. “I accompanied the Norbe IX probe during its construction in South Korea. Then I started working on assets, which I never left”, concludes Carla.

- No soy or sugarcane! Brazil's largest exported product is oil, to the delight of Petrobras and other companies in the sector.
Another 11 women work on the rig, which represents 6% of the entire team, although the number is low, it is a good level when compared to the reality of the oil and gas market.
According to Carla, “Being a woman in this career will always be a challenge, especially in Brazil where there is no long tradition of women leading vessels. In my case, the support of my parents was fundamental for me to overcome the obstacles of the beginning of my professional life”.
Carla was born in Guadalupe, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro and always liked being close to the sea. “My parents are from the interior of Rio de Janeiro, but I was born in the capital and had this connection with water since I was a child. I was studying Chemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro when I heard about a competition for the Merchant Navy Officer Training School and decided to apply. I studied, passed and dropped out of college.”, he says.
Carla has experience in chemical and oil companies before joining Ocyan. On most vessels, she was the only woman on the crew. “In the beginning, I needed to show at all times that I was qualified. Sometimes I was subjected to activities where my superiors were clearly testing my physical strength. After that, I'm sure women can be in every role on a ship”, she defends.
Motherhood is a challenge but not an impediment for those who work on board, like Carla, who has a daughter who is 1 year and 9 months old. “Today, she is my greatest strength. For her, it's worth all the effort and work, even if it's hard to stay away for 15 days. Thankfully, technology has evolved and we can see each other via video at least once a day,” she explains.

Diversity & Inclusion
This year, Ocyan started the Diversity & Inclusion program, which has a committee responsible for the program's strategy, in addition to affinity groups. In 2019, the priority activities are 'gender equity' and 'people with disabilities'. Each one has a dedicated leader, made up of volunteer members scattered throughout the company.
The program's proposal is to ensure an inclusive work environment, free of discrimination, in which each person can be who they really are.
“The program is an important step towards expanding our numbers, especially considering the challenges inherent to our segment, whose performance is predominantly male and offshore – the professionals on board correspond to around 70% of our total workforce”, explains Nir Lander, director of Planning and People and leader of Ocyan's Diversity & Inclusion Program.
