Audacious objective: minimize to zero the volume of waste destined for landfills, resulting from the oil company's business activities
Rio de Janeiro, May 23, 2023 – Conquering impressive milestones in waste management, Ocyan, a giant in the oil and gas sector, reports the reuse of 96% of waste from its drilling rigs. With the implementation of the revolutionary Aterro Zero project, the company drastically reduced the environmental impact of its activities, in addition to reducing its ecological footprint. This should also be a matter for the operator at the event FPSO Brazil Congress 2023.
At the forefront of the upstream oil and gas segment, Ocyan stood out in 2021 as one of the first companies to achieve such milestones. Going even further in 2022, the company reduced the amount of waste destined for landfills by an astonishing 65% compared to 2021. This is equivalent to a total of 123 tons of waste sent for recycling.
The Ocyan Landfill Project: A green innovation
The Zero Landfill Project is an innovation incorporated into Ocyan, first applied in the Drilling Business Unit. This initiative strengthens the company's commitment to environmental and social issues, as well as its effort to increase the sustainability of its operations and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices in its management.

“This year, our main challenge was to restructure the waste management process in partnership with our service providers, realigning contracts to ensure adherence to our processes”, points out Marco Aurélio Fonseca, Executive Vice President of Sustainability at Ocyan.
Ocyan's digital path to waste reduction
The Aterro Zero initiative is accelerating the digitization of Ocyan's processes, such as the implementation of the Easy Check List, which replaces paper forms with checks made on tablets. “We are saving more than a ton of paper per year, increasing our efficiency, reducing costs and ensuring greater reliability in data collection, storage and control”, celebrates Fonseca.
The scope of the Ocyan Aterro Zero Project
Created by Ocyan in 2018, Aterro Zero has already gone through four stages of development and effective implementation. Ocyan looked for partners capable of developing viable alternatives to deal with common waste, in addition to landfills.
With promising results, Ocyan continues to expand its impact, with some customers and service providers announcing plans to implement similar practices. “This makes us realize that, in addition to achieving our objective of reducing the environmental impact of our activities, we are influencing the market in a positive way”, concludes Fonseca.
As a next step, Ocyan plans to expand Landfill Zero to all business units managed by the company by the end of 2023, with the aim of reusing 100% of waste and completely eliminating waste disposal in landfills in all its activities. .
