Abeeólica has projections for the start of offshore energy production with the installation of wind farms at sea for the year 2030 and, until then, the companies await the new regulations in relation to the projects that are under development
According to projections by the Brazilian Association of Wind Energy (Abeeólica) for this Wednesday (01/06), offshore wind farms should only start operations around the year 2030. Currently, several companies are waiting for regulations regarding wind energy production in Mar and, with the delivery of the norms foreseen for the year 2022, they will be able to continue the construction projects of offshore wind farms.
Offshore wind energy production could start around the year 2030 with the start of operation of offshore wind farms, according to Abeeólica
The production of wind energy on the high seas, also known as offshore, is the newest bet in the energy sector for the coming years on the Brazilian coast, due to the high potential for energy generation. But, according to Elbia Gannoum, president of Abeeólica, the beginning of the operation of the wind farms may take a while and the executive assesses that, at least, in the next 7 years, there will still not be an undertaking in offshore operation in the country.
The president of Abeeólica reinforces: “We expect the regulation for this year and, therefore, I believe that the first electric energy auction for the offshore segment should take place in 2023. From then on, companies will need between five and seven years to build an offshore wind installation”.
- China and Saudi Arabia turn desert into energy powerhouse with world's largest battery storage system
- Nuclear fusion has found the miracle it needed on the road to commercial power plants
- This is how Uruguay managed to reach 98% renewable ENERGY — see how they did it
- Abu Dhabi changes the game with solar energy: WORLD'S first 24/7 power grid
Thus, the expectation is that the beginning of offshore wind energy production will start around the beginning of the year 2030, with companies increasingly invested in this new alternative for the energy segment. This happens because, currently, the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama) has more than 80 GW of offshore projects under analysis, proving the search of energy companies for offshore generation.
Despite the high installation costs and the need for a strong initial investment to build wind farms, this is the new big move by large companies in the segment. And among those interested in the production of offshore wind energy are Shell Energy, TotalEnergies, Equinor and Acciona, which strongly seek regulations for the development of projects.
Offshore wind energy parks are the energy sector's new bet for the future of the production market in Brazil
Between 2020 and 2021 alone, the additional offshore wind energy capacity in the world more than tripled, going from 6 GW to 21 GW and, with that, the national market now sees the benefits of these ventures.
Thus, Abeeólica now sees a strong future scenario for the segment in Brazil, especially after the publication of Decree 10.946, which provides for the assignment of use of physical spaces and the use of natural resources at sea for the generation of offshore electricity.
This happens mainly due to the strong winds on the Brazilian coast, which offshore projects have observed in different regions of the country an average capacity factor of 41%, higher than that of onshore projects, with an average of 36%. In addition, integration with the oil sector is also one of the attractions for companies that analyze the installation of offshore wind farms in Brazil.
Now, companies and Abeeólica await the regulations regarding the projects, expected to be delivered in 2022, and expect a future of strong investments and financial investments in the Brazilian market.
