Samarco is a privately held company that operates in the mining segment, a joint venture owned by Vale and BHP, based in Belo Horizonte (MG). The company has operating units in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. The main product developed by Samarco are iron ore pellets, raw material for steel production by the steel industry. The company resumed its operations in a different way, with the introduction of new technologies and more security, seeking to generate lasting value for the territories where we operate.
Samarco emerged as a project in 1971 from the merger of Marcona Corporation and S/A Mineração Trindade (Samitri). While Marcona had experience in concentrating and pelletizing iron ore, Samitri held mining rights for the “Complexo Alegria”, in MG, rich in itabirite ore, with low iron content, until then never explored in Brazil. By investing in technology, companies would transform itabirite, treated as waste, into a quality product, with an iron content of around 70%.
