Master's Degree in Scientific Communication: what you need to know
O Academic Master's Degree in Dissemination of Science, Technology and Health offered by Oswaldo Cruz House (COC), one of Fiocruz's units, focuses on training researchers capable of strengthening the dialogue between science and society.
According to Fiocruz, the course is ideal for those who wish to understand and improve scientific communication strategies and their impact on society.
The program offers a workload of 48 credits and must be completed in a period of at least 12 and at most 24 months.
During the course, students will be challenged to develop innovative scientific dissemination actions, in addition to creating new forms of interaction between the public and research institutions.
Lines of research: three areas to explore
Within the master's degree, students can choose between three lines of research that complement each other.
According to the notice, these areas of study seek to expand the understanding of how science and society interrelate. They are:
- Scientific Culture and Society: A critical approach to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and its interactions with the environment, health and technology.
- Education, Communication and Mediation: Focused on how education and communication influence the way science is presented and understood in different social contexts.

For the 2025 selection process, 15 vacancies are available, distributed among the mentioned lines of research.
According to the Fiocruz ordinance (PR Fiocruz 491/2021), there is a reserve of places to ensure the inclusion of historically underrepresented groups. This includes:
- 7% vacancies for people with disabilities;
- 20% vacancies for candidates who self-declare as black (black and brown);
- 3% of vacancies for indigenous people.

How to apply and selection process
Registration is now open and will run until the October 14th, 2024, and are completely free.
Interested parties must register online by accessing the Fiocruz Integrated Education System (SIEF).
The selection process consists of five stages, each designed to assess candidates’ skills and potential:
- Documentation Analysis: Checking the documents sent;
- Remote Written Test: Exam on current topics in scientific dissemination, with a minimum required grade of 7,0;
- Pre-Research Project Evaluation: Evaluation of the pre-research project, with a score between 1 and 10;
- Remote Interview: Evaluation of the CV and performance in the interview;
- Language Test (English): Test of understanding of scientific texts in English.
According to the notice, the results will be released at the end of October, after all evaluation phases have been completed.
