Petrobras has started, on last Monday (04/07), the registrations for the Petrobras Journalism Selection, an unprecedented initiative aimed at fostering the production of reports focusing on science and diversity. Journalists from all regions of Brazil can apply for scholarships aimed at reports in text, audio, or video format. The registration deadline is May 11.
In total, 15 scholarships worth R$ 20,000 each will be offered, totaling an investment of R$ 300,000. This is the largest scholarship award for reporting ever granted in the country, representing a milestone in supporting the national press.
Reports On Science And Diversity Are The Focus Of The Award
In this first edition of the Petrobras Journalism Selection, the chosen themes reflect the company’s commitment to valuing science produced by underrepresented groups and to scientific research focused on diversity.

The aim is to increase the visibility of transformative initiatives that often remain on the margins of traditional media coverage.
The president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, emphasized the importance of the project:
“We want to contribute to the realization of in-depth reports on important topics for Brazil. We know that producing this type of content requires time and resources. With these scholarships, we intend to encourage journalists from all over the country to tell stories that add relevance and diversity to Brazilian journalism.”
Regional Diversity And Inclusion Mark The Distribution Of The Scholarships
In order to ensure a balanced geographical representation, Petrobras will award three scholarships per region of the country (North, Northeast, Central-West, South, and Southeast), with one in each format – audio, video, and text.
This decentralization seeks to ensure that voices from all parts of Brazil are heard and valued.
Furthermore, the program establishes that at least one scholarship per region be allocated to journalists from historically underrepresented groups.
This includes women, Black or Brown people, Indigenous people, quilombolas, members of the LGBTQIAPN+ community, and people with disabilities.
Who Can Participate In The Petrobras Journalism Selection?
Professional journalists working in media outlets or as freelancers can apply.
At the time of registration, it is necessary to prove which outlet will publish the winning report. The registrations are free.
The Petrobras Journalism Selection has the support of the Brazilian Press Association (ABI) and the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj), reinforcing the commitment to valuing independent, investigative, and quality journalism in the country.
