The two largest lithotheques in Brazil will cover from the first discoveries of oil on land, to the recent ones extracted from the pre-salt layer. Petrobras' objective is to preserve the geological memory of the country.
A Petrobras informed in a material fact, which reached an agreement with the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB-CPRM) to install the two largest geological rock collections in the country (the so-called “lithotheques”) – a in Rio de Janeiro and another in Caeté (MG). The ceremony that marked the progress of the project took place this Friday (28/10), at the company's headquarters, in RJ, and was attended by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Adolfo Sachsida, as well as representatives from Petrobras, ANP, SGB-CPRM and IBP.
The collection of samples is owned by the Union and is currently under the custody of Petrobras. the project is result of a protocol of intentions signed in 2018 by Petrobras, SGB-CPRM and ANP, aiming at cooperation and operational technical support to expand geological knowledge applied to oil and gas areas.
According to the state-owned company, the protocol of intentions also provides for the installation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, with high-performance laboratories, and the revitalization of the Museum of Earth Sciences.

In 2020, Petrobras and the SGB-CPRM signed a cooperation term for the elaboration of projects and construction of lithotheques. In parallel, the institutions started the executive project to installation of the Reference Center in Geosciences, in addition to the renovation and expansion of the Museum of Earth Sciences.
Lithotheques will house hundreds of thousands of rock samples collected over more than 70 years of oil exploration and production history in Brazil
When built, the lithotheques shall house hundreds of thousands of rock samples collected over more than 70 years of oil exploration and production history in Brazil, covering a period that goes from the first discoveries on land, to the recent finds extracted from the pre-salt layer.
Petrobras' objective is to contribute to the dissemination of geoscientific knowledge to academia and research institutions, in addition to preserving the country's geological memory.
To get an idea of the pre-salt rocks, collected at a depth of more than 7 meters, bring with them an expressive volume of data, essential to understand the origin of the formation of the deposits, in addition to serving as a legacy for future discoveries.
