CEO of Compagás highlights that the cost reduction with the agreement with Petrobras will make natural gas more competitive for the industry
Petrobras and Compagas recently announced the signing of new contracts for the supply of natural gas, valued at approximately R$6,4 billion. These agreements were established as a result of a public call made by the distributor from Paraná in the first quarter and will be effective from 2024 to 2034, according to the website Petronotícias.
Cost reduction for the industry
Rafael Lamastra Jr., CEO of Compagas, highlighted that the new contracts with Petrobras include a significant reduction, around 10%, in the cost of the gas molecule, scheduled to come into effect from January next year. This reduction will be reflected in tariffs, making natural gas more competitive for users, especially for industry. The executive stated: “With this reduction being transferred to the tariff, we will make natural gas more competitive for our users, especially for industry.”
In addition to cost reduction, Compagas also negotiated contractual conditions with Petrobras that diversify the indexes used. With these new agreements, approximately 20% of Compagas' supply portfolio will be indexed to the Henry Hub, a reference indicator in the US gas market.

Lamastra explained, “While this is a groundbreaking initiative, we saw this as an opportunity to reduce contract volatility in the face of fluctuations caused by macroeconomic and political conditions.” The distributor added that the remaining part of its contract portfolio will continue to be indexed to Brent oil and the dollar.
