Petrobras, one of the largest companies in the oil industry in the world, approved changes in the structure of its boards with the aim of decarbonizing the company.

The changes were announced by the president of the state-owned company, Jean Paul Prates, in a video released last Friday (7). The changes still need to be approved by the company's Board of Directors.

A Petrobras strategy is to expand the scope of some of the traditional technical departments, which were exclusively focused on oil, and create a new one focused on energy transition of the company. Second Jean Paul, the company is “decarbonizing the 1st echelon of the company”.

Energy Transition Board is the main change

The main proposed change in the structure of the Petrobras is the creation of the Energy Transition Board, a folder that will be responsible for the business of natural gas and activities related to renewable energy and decarbonization. The new board will be led by Maurício Tolmasquim, former president of the Energy Research Company (EPE) and professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

The structure of Petrobras Energy Transition Board follows the example of oil companies such as BP and TotalEnergies, which already have departments dedicated to the energy transition.

Other changes to the board structure

In addition to the creation of Energy Transition Board, Petrobras proposed other changes in the name of some boards and also the extinction of the Institutional Relationship and Sustainability Board. The proposition is as follows:

  • Production Development Board is now called Engineering, Technology and Innovation Board;
  • Refining, Gas and Energy Board will be Industrial Processes and Products Board;
  • Commercialization and Logistics Board will be the Logistics, Commercialization and Markets Board;
  • Institutional Relationship and Sustainability Board will be extinguished. In its place, Petrobras will create the Corporate Management Board.

Consolidation of the decarbonization strategy

Changes to the board structure of the Petrobras represent an important step towards the consolidation of the strategy of company decarbonization. With the creation of Energy Transition Board and expanding the scope of other areas, the company clearly shows how it is investing in the transition to clean energy and in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

A Petrobras is one of the largest companies in the oil industry in the world and has an important responsibility in the transition to a energy matrix cleaner. The company has already been investing in renewable energy sources and now, with the changes in the boards, it should further intensify its efforts to decarbonize its activities.

The creation of Energy Transition Board and the changes in Petrobras' board structure are essential for consolidating the company's decarbonization strategy. With a new board dedicated to the transition to clean energies and expanding the scope of other departments, the company takes an important step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving the environment. It's a one-way road to oil industry, which has the responsibility to actively participate in the global energy transition.
