Bunker produced complies with IMO standards and makes Petrobras a member of the world club of oil companies producing this type of fuel
As published by Ship & Bunker, Petrobras produced its first batch of Bunker VLSFO with sulfur content in compliance with the IMO (International Maritime Organization) standards for 2020, which provide for a sulfur content below 0,5% from the 1st January 2020.
The bunker produced by the Brazilian state-owned company has 0,34% sulfur and the fuel specifications were drawn up by the company itself.
Bunker is the name given to the fuel used in ship engines, also called heavy oil, it is viscous and has a high sulfur content due to its composition, a mixture of fuel oil and diesel oil.

The fuel must be able to work under high pressure without its utilities or molecular structure being affected, causing loss of power in the vessel's engine. It is allied to the lubricant in its injection, essential for the health of the gears that move the ship.
Membership in the Producers' Club
With the production of the bunker, Petrobras joins the club of oil companies that manufacture the fuel and its development was challenging, as normally the oils produced in Brazil are known to be particularly low in sulfur.
Petrobras joins the group before the publication of the new global sulfur limit, the company joins Red Sea Bunkering (RSB), BP, whose fuel will be available in the second half of 2019, and Stonewin, which will offer bunkers VLSFO of 0,50%, effective May 1st, in accordance with IMO 2020 in Port Louis, Mauritius.
The first bunker production by Petrobras was 618 tons and was reportedly transported by a vessel chartered by Petrobras.
