Aiming to become a global benchmark in decommissioning, Petrobras imposes green recycling policies on 26 platforms, with its project starting with the Marlim platform.

Maintaining the objective of becoming a world reference in platform decommissioning as a green destination model, Petrobras announced that it intends to dispose of 26 platforms with a Green Recycling policy. Delimiting 5 years for this project, the state-owned company predicts an investment of US$ 9,8 billion in decommissioning activities, and the pilot project for this new initiative will begin in 2023 with the P-32, a platform located in the Marlim field, in the Campos Basin.

The new green recycling policy on the platforms focuses on reducing impacts on the environment

The new green recycling policy intends to implement actions to minimize the generation of waste, avoiding impacts on biodiversity in its production, in addition to the reuse of equipment and incentives for the circular economy.

The state-owned company also aims to previously inventory the materials on the vessels, thus ensuring the proper preparation of a recycling plan for the shipyards.

In this way, Petrobras will enable bidding processes for shipyards, only for those with ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management) and ISO 9001 (Quality Management) certificates, which have the dry dock (dry-dock) or impermeable land with drainage system.

In addition, the requirements of the European Union Ship Recycling Resolution n.º 1257/2013 are considered in the case of international shipyards.

In the case of Brazilians, operating licenses and compliance with legislation on the environment, safety and health of the subject workers are considered.

According to Mariana Cavassin Paes, executive manager of production development projects at Petrobras, the work composed in 2022 aims to ensure the application of environmental and human rights rules throughout the entire supply chain.

"The work, carried out throughout 2022, sought to ensure the application of environmental and human rights rules throughout the entire supply chain, as well as guaranteeing the proper final disposal of materials arising from decommissioning, in line with the industry's best practices and principles established in the UN International Charter of Human Rights, with a focus on sustainability and the guarantee of a sustainable destination”, he communicated.

Decommissioning is part of the life of a production system, Petrobras bets on it

The decommissioning process is part of the life cycle of a production system, and consists of a set of activities that are directly related to the definitive interruption of the operations of a platform and associated equipment, when there are no more opportunities to extend or maintain production. .

Therefore, through this new green recycling policy, Petrobras believes that it will increase its control over the recycling of the units, reinforcing the guarantees that production takes place in line with the best ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices of the world industry. Keeping the focus on generating capital, sustainability, safety and respect for people and the environment.

The structuring of the state-owned company's program predicts the acquisition of capital worth US$ 9,8 billion in decommissioning activities in the period from 2023 to 2027.
