Generating more than 3GW in renewable energy, Piauí reached the mark of 1 GWH photovoltaic solar energy, leading the sector in the country

Piauí reached leadership in the production capacity of solar energy throughout Brazil. According to data from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), the power of photovoltaic solar energy installed in Piauí surpassed 1 GWH. Right behind was Bahia, with a capacity of 800 MWh.

Solar and wind energy sources were responsible for more than 90% of Piauí's power in the month of May, giving the state the title of one of the largest generators of renewable energy.

According to Aneel, Piauí's energy matrix in the last month was 3,71 GW. The generation of photovoltaic solar energy alone is five times the energy generated by the Boa Esperança Hydroelectric Power Plant, in Guadalupe. It has the capacity to produce around 237.000 MW. In terms of wind energy, Piauí ranked fourth, with 2 GW.

Statement by the Director of Mining

According to the State Secretariat for Mining, Petroleum and Renewable Energy, Piauí's leadership proves its potential for generating wealth through natural resources.

The Director of Mining, Ramon Campelo says that, even with the leadership in photovoltaic solar energy, there are still several plants that will start operating. He claims that those under construction will generate 215 MW and those yet to be built promise to generate 2 GW.

In terms of wind energy, in Piauí, plants are being built with a capacity of 500 MW and another 944 MW from companies that have yet to start up.

Piauí is a reference in photovoltaic solar energy and new investments in the state can place the state in the world ranking

Piauí has been developing in the sector because it is privilegedly located in the Northeast region, mainly in the so-called “solar belt”, which has the best level of solar radiation in Brazil. Piauí has a period of 12 hours of sun and about 5 kWh/m2 per day. Photovoltaic solar power plants bring several advantages to the state in all aspects.

During its construction, it generates several jobs, savings for the municipalities and contributes to the generation of taxes when the plant starts operating.

Currently, Piauí has photovoltaic plants in five municipalities and, in relation to wind energy, in nine. Most of the plants are located in the semi-arid region, where the HDI is lower than the state average and the arrival of investments, such as this one, is very important.
