See more details about the energy transition and the role of Porto do Açu in sustainability and innovation in the industrial and oil sector
The Port of Açu, located on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, is consolidating itself as one of the largest energy transition centers in Brazil. Completing almost a decade of operation, the port is considered a key piece for accelerating the decarbonization of Brazilian industries. Prumo Logística CEO, Rogério Zampronha, described the Port of Açu as “the port of Brazil’s energy transition”, highlighting its role in developing sustainable and renewable solutions for the future and the oil sector, according to the Broadcast website.
Renewable energy and low carbon hydrogen
The focus of the Port of Açu it is not just in freight transport, but in the transformation of the energy sector of oil. At an event held in São Paulo, Zampronha presented the initiatives of Innovative ports for renewable energy-based industrialization and low-carbon hydrogen. “Our strategy is aligned with the biggest global sustainability goals,” said the CEO. The Port has already signed new contracts with global companies in sectors such as agribusiness and low-carbon industrialization, transforming the site into an energy innovation hub.
Infrastructure and billion-dollar investments
With 130 km² of area and 11 terminals, the Port of Açu is 100% private and is part of a major oil expansion project. Over the next 10 years, the port infrastructure will receive an additional investment of R$22 billion, bringing the total to resources applied for R$ 42 billion. In 2023, the Port of Açu handled an impressive 84,6 million tons, an increase of 27% compared to the previous year, consolidating its position as one of the largest ports in Brazil, responsible for 40% of the country's oil exports.

The promise of green ammonia: The future of Porto do Açu
One of the most promising projects at Porto do Açu is the implementation of a green ammonia plant, powered by low carbon hydrogen. The partnership with the Norwegian Fuella AS aims to produce up to 400 million tons of green ammonia per year, using water electrolysis to generate clean energy. This production will be directed to both the national and international markets, with distribution through the Port's modern facilities.
If I'm not mistaken, the Port of Açu was one of businessman Eike Batista's projects.
