According to the Energy Secretary of the MME, the tariff reduction will be a result of changes brought about by MPs after privatization

The Secretary of Energy of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Rodrigo Limp, said that the main objective of privatizing Eletrobras is to allow the reduction of tariffs on electricity bills and not the collection itself. On Tuesday (23), the Federal Government delivered Provisional Measures (MP) to the National Congress to accelerate the privatization of Eletrobras. The text stipulates that the government can reserve the right to veto decisions of state-owned companies through preferred shares.

According to Rodrigo Limp, the tariff reduction will be the result of changes brought about by Provisional Measures after privatization. According to him, these changes include improvements in efficiency and changes in the contracting system for some of the company's hydroelectric plants.

The MP's text forwarded to Congress confirms that Eletrobras will pay the government a sum of money after privatization, currently estimated at 50 billion reais. Half of this – around 25 billion reais – will be used to reduce costs that increase the electricity bill, while the other half will be allocated to the federal government.

The Secretary of Energy of the Ministry of Mines and Energy says that “Of course we consider the fiscal aspect of the country, but in no way does this project have a collection aspect. I would say that the main point of the project is to bring benefits to electricity consumers”.

The provisional measures provide for changes in the contracting regime of some Eletrobras hydroelectric plants. These plants will leave the quota system, in which energy prices are lower, determined by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), and converted to an independent production system, in which the company will freely negotiate prices.
