PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) and Inpex have teamed up to conduct a study on the potential for carbon capture and storage.
Thailand's oil and gas company PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) has partnered with Japan's Inpex to conduct a study on the potential of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the Gulf Northern Thailand.
The study is expected to lay the foundation for the potential development of the CCS center in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Investment in CCS is an important measure to reduce carbon emissions and meet international environmental commitments.
PTTEP and Inpex will share their CCSS knowledge and experience within the framework of an international collaboration between the Thai Department of Mineral Fuels (DMF) and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC). This type of cooperation is essential to advance carbon capture and storage technologies.

The potential of carbon capture and storage in Thailand
We have unique knowledge of the Gulf of Thailand subsurface and experience in the Arthit gas field CCS initiative. Combined with the international experience from Inpex at implementation of CCS projects, we believe that the outcome of the study will equip Thailand with the necessary knowledge and information to outline the CCS infrastructure and development plan, especially the core CCS initiative for the CEE, as CCS is one of the promising paths that could substantially reduce industry's carbon emissions and keep the country's net zero greenhouse gas emissions targets within reach,' said Montri Rawanchaikul, CEO of PTTEP.
Advances in CCS Feasibility Study in Thailand
Meanwhile, PTTEP is leading the feasibility study of PTT Group's East Thailand CCS. core initiative at CEE that aims to reduce CO2 emissions from the group's operational facilities in Rayong and Chonburi provinces, as well as nearby industrial areas, using CCS technology and storage potential in the Gulf of Thailand.
Implementation and operation of the CCS project
PTTEP is also progressing with the first CCS project in Thailand, at the Arthit gas field in the Gulf of Thailand. With the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase now complete, PTTEP expects to begin CCS operation at the Arthit field in 2027 to reduce 700.000 to 1.000.000 tons of CO2 per year from gas production.
Geological advances and greenhouse gas emissions targets
The result of the CCS The study at EEC, the Arthit field and the CCS exploration project in the Northern Gulf of Thailand will deepen geological knowledge about the storage capacity and will help Thailand achieve the target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.
