Researchers develop indestructible quartz crystal HD. In addition to lasting billions of years and being resistant to high temperatures, it is a HD capable of storing 360 TB.
Scientists Southampton University, in the United Kingdom, have made an impressive discovery: they have managed to store the entire sequence of the human genome in a quartz crystal using 5D optical memory technology. This indestructible crystal, smaller than a coin, has an astonishing storage capacity of up to 360 terabytes (TB). This innovation could revolutionize the future of data storage, offering a long-lasting and resistant solution capable of preserving information for billions of years on a hard drive.
Quartz crystal HD can withstand up to 1.000ºC
The claims of indestructibility of the HD capable of storing 360 TB are no joke, considering that the disks can withstand temperatures of up to 1.000 ºC, cosmic radiation and even direct impact forces of 10 tons per cm³.
Developed at the Southampton Optoelectronics Research Centre, the 5D memory crystals use ultrafast lasers to inscribe data into “oriented nanostructured voids within the silica”.

The 5D in the name comes from the fact that, unlike 2D markings on a piece of paper or tape, this quartz crystal hard drive uses two optical dimensions and three spatial coordinates to write across the material. The team claims that this technique enables an unprecedented data density of up to 360 terabytes at its largest size, without degradation over billions of years.
The goal of this effort is simple, and the researchers imagine that in a distant future, where science allows the reconstruction of organisms from DNA alone, the genome map stored in this eternal crystal could provide a failsafe.
In addition to reviving humans, crystals could also preserve the genomes of plant and animal species threatened with extinction today due to climate change, habitat loss and other environmental crises.
Understand how the HD capable of storing 360 TB can save humanity
Furthermore, if humans fail to figure out how to recreate organisms, or disappear before they do, scientists have designed the quartz crystal hard drive so that other intelligent beings can retrieve it. According to research leader Professor Peter Kazansky, the visual key inscribed on the crystal gives the discoverer knowledge of what data is stored within and how it can be utilized.
The key represents the basic molecular structure of DNA's nucleic acid base pairs, how they form the iconic double helix structure, and even a reference to the famous "Pioneer's Plate" diagrams once carried by interstellar probes from NASA to represent life on Earth.
Researchers have now deposited the first such genome crystal backup in an archive in an underground salt mine in Hallstatt, Austria, intended to preserve records of human civilization.
New HD will help companies with backups
The quartz crystal hard drive was made using a laser that emits powerful, short pulses of light, recording the data in three layers, spaced just 3 micrometers apart. The nanostructure changes the way light passes through the crystal, altering its polarization, which can then be read by a combination of an optical microscope and a polarizer.
The research is led by Jingyu Zhang of the Center for Research in Optoelectronics, in partnership with the Eindhoven University of Technology, claims that a very secure and stable form of portable memory using glass is being developed, which could be very useful for organizations with large files. At the moment, companies have to back up their files every 5 to 10 years due to the short lifespan of hard drives.
