TCE approves resumption of construction on the Gávea subway
O The Rio de Janeiro State Court of Auditors (TCE) unanimously approved the resumption of construction on the Gávea subway, a long-awaited step that promises to give a new direction to one of the biggest obstacles to urban mobility in the city. The work, halted since 2015, finally got the green light to move forward after the signing of a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC) between the state government, the concessionaire MetrôRio and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
Imagine a work that seems never to end. Well, the construction of the Gávea subway fits this description perfectly. Since 2015, when the works were interrupted, the population of Rio has been anxiously awaiting a solution to this impasse. But now, with the recent approval of the TCE, it seems that the hole will finally be filled and the excavations will come to life again. Of course, we still have to wait a little longer – around 60 days for the actual start – because of the bureaucracy involved, but at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel, or rather, the station.
The next steps for the construction of the Gávea subway
O The agreement foresees that the concessionaire MetrôRio will assume responsibility for investing around R$600 million in the construction, while the state government will cover R$97 million.. This amount will be used to complete the Gávea station and to operate a section that will connect the Gávea and São Conrado stations. Although the initial project was more ambitious, the current version will be scaled down, but it still promises to ease traffic and improve public transportation in the region.

The concession for subway lines 1, 2 and 4 will be unified, extending MetrôRio's contract until 2048. This new arrangement includes a series of guarantees so that construction continues without any new setbacks.
Impacts on the region and the long journey of the armadillo
The situation at Gávea station is critical, especially with the flooded tunnels and a structural risk that is a concern since 2017. The famous “tatuzão”, equipment used in the excavations, is still parked under Alto Leblon, awaiting its fate.. There are rumors that it could be reused in other projects or even dismantled, but nothing has been decided yet. In any case, its maintenance has generated high costs for the state, which makes many wonder: what will be done with the armadillo?
Conclusion near? Maybe…
Despite all the progress, the expectation is that the construction of the Gávea station will be completed in about two years, after the agreement is approved by the courts. The people of Rio, especially those living in the South Zone, have already become accustomed to the delays, but there is a certain optimism in the air. The return of works promises to solve mobility problems and improve the quality of life of those who depend on the subway.
Now We can only hope that everything goes according to plan. and that the armadillo finally finds its end – be it in the depths of Leblon or in some new excavation in Brazil.
With all this in mind, will the Gávea subway finally come to fruition or are we facing yet another never-ending soap opera of the construction industry in Rio? What do you think?
It could take the metro to Meier, Cascadura, Bonsucesso, and other very important neighborhoods than Gavea.
Rio de Janeiro is a joke, everything in the city takes a long time and when it's not very well made up, it's so much embezzlement of money in front of ****'s face, right? And the people of Rio think their reputation as scoundrels is pretty, how long will they pay the price?!
