State Secretary for Oil, Gas, Energy and Naval Industry of Rio de Janeiro asks for priority for the completion works of Angra 3
Hugo Leal, State Secretary for Oil, Gas, Energy and Naval Industry of Rio de Janeiro, asked the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, priority for the completion works of the Angra 3 nuclear power plant. According to him, “the resumption of work on Angra 3 will generate 7.000 to 9.000 jobs and R$ 21 billion in investments”.
Secretary also defends the construction of Angra 4
The state secretary, who is a defender of the production of nuclear energy, also defended that Angra dos Reis is home to yet another nuclear power plant, Angra 4, and that the useful life of Angra 1 is extended. Furthermore, he argued in favor of expansion of INB's uranium enrichment unit (Nuclear Industries of Brazil), which is located in Resende, in the Engenheiro Passos district.
It is important to remember that, in addition to the nuclear power plants and INB, the Institute of Nuclear Engineering (IEN), Nuclep – production of heavy equipment for Nuclebrás –, the Navy shipyard – where the Brazil's first nuclear submarine –, the regulatory body and the National Nuclear Security Authority (ANSN). Thus, Hugo Leal sees the state of Rio as the “national capital of nuclear energy”.

About the resumption of work on the Angra 3 nuclear power plant
resumed on November last year, the construction of Angra 3 has stages that include civil works, electromechanical assembly, commissioning of equipment and systems and operational tests. As was also done at Angra 2, it will use technology of German origin developed by Siemens/KWU, currently owned by the French company Framatome.
In 1984, the construction of the plant began and underwent several interruptions, which were consequences of economic restrictions. When it reached 65% progress in 2015, it was stalled for the last time because of reports of diversion of resources.
The Angra 3 Critical Path Acceleration Plan was created for the resumption of works. At the current stage, in addition to completion of civil works, the closing of the steel sphere that is inside the reactor building and the installation of important equipment, such as the used fuel pool, the polar bridge and the semi-gantry crane, are planned.
