Numbers are part of an inventory released at the end of 2022, which highlights important actions such as the use of renewable energy by the company in the chemical sector.
Sao Paulo, January 2023 – The Sabará Group, a reference in the development of technologies, solutions and raw materials aimed at the water treatment markets and food and beverage industries, has just released its report on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions for the year 2021. The inventory, prepared by the Sabará Group and audited by BSI Brasil Sistemas de Gestão Ltda, points out that emissions in 2021 were reduced by 5% compared to 2020, surpassing the target of
Group, which is to decline by 4,2% annually through 2030.
“The objective of the report is to reveal the profile of the Sabará Group in relation to GHG emissions and, thus, enable the development of strategies for the continuous reduction of gases and impacts generated, with quantitative and qualitative analysis. We are satisfied with the results obtained so far, because we went beyond the established target, but with the awareness that we must advance even more in this area”, explains the ESG coordinator, Giovanna Cappellano.
The inventory takes into account all the emission sources of the four production units and the two administrative offices of the company, using the criteria established by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. The analysis is divided into 3 scopes, but only 1 and 2 are included in the Group's reduction target, with scope 1 – direct emissions of Greenhouse Gases; 2 – indirect GHG emissions resulting from the purchase of energy; and 3 – indirect emissions as a result of the company's activities, but from sources that do not belong or are not controlled by the company.

“This last period analyzed was fundamental for us to improve the control of measurements in the Group's units, which since 2021 have had an internally developed and specific system for the monthly monitoring of the indicators that form the basis of our emission calculations, and which we have improved at each stage”, adds Giovanna.
new certification
Scope 2 indirect emissions, resulting from the purchase of energy, were largely responsible for the good performance in 2021. This year, the Sabará Group, which already had 100% renewable energy at its Santa Barbara D'Oeste unit, acquired the I -REC, attesting to this unit's use of clean energy, symbolizing its engagement with the reduction of gases and the negative impact generated by the consumption of energy produced from the burning of fuels.
“With the certification, Grupo Sabará guarantees that the energy consumed comes from clean sources, and in our case, from wind farms. Before that, although we had the guarantee of renewable energy at the Santa Barbara D'Oeste site through a contract, emissions were not calculated using the purchase method, because it was not possible to confirm the source of energy. Now this is possible”.
In addition to all efforts to reduce, which also include awareness campaigns about the use of biofuels, for example, the company acquired carbon credits to offset 100% of the remaining emissions in scopes 1 and 2. Each credit is equivalent to one ton of CO2eq, which reinforces the commitment to reduction actions.
“Grupo Sabará's business is directly linked to life's structuring axes, such as quality water and food. In this way, we are constantly looking for processes that generate value not only internally, but especially for the products and solutions we offer. The search for better initiatives goes beyond the generation of less environmental impact, since the company's guidelines provide positive impacts throughout our chain of action”, concludes the ESG coordinator of Grupo Sabará.
Learn more: Greenhouse Gases
By absorbing part of the solar radiation in the atmosphere, the Greenhouse Gases keep the energy of this radiation in the Earth's atmosphere being transformed into heat. Thus, there is an increase in temperature on the planet, which contributes to the worsening of the Greenhouse Effect.
Although it is a natural phenomenon that regulates the Earth's temperature and makes life possible on the planet, if it is highly stimulated by excess gas emissions from human activities, it is capable of causing complete imbalance in the climate system and, consequently, in ecosystems.
