Shell's FPSO will be taken to a dedicated recycling facility for the vessel which is approved by the European Union
Shell contracted the Danish company Modern American Recycling Services Europe (MARS) to carry out the sustainable recycling of its floating storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) “Fluminense”, which operated for 20 years in the oil fields of Bijupirá and Salema, in the Campos Basin. MARS is an EU-approved recycling facility that was selected last year to decommission other FPSOs. The Shell vessel is expected to arrive at MARS Europe in Frederikshavn, Northern Denmark, in 2024, after obtaining the necessary approvals in accordance with local and international regulations, according to the website Portos e Navios.
Operation history of FPSO “Fluminense”
Modec was responsible for converting Shell's FPSO vessel “Fluminense” from a ULCC tanker, in addition to operating and maintaining the vessel. With the capacity to process 81.000 bopd and compress 75m cfd of natural gas, the FPSO was used by Shell for two decades in the Bijupirá and Salema oil fields in the Campos Basin. However, the decision was made to scrap the ship due to its age and obsolescence.
Green and sustainable recycling of FPSOs
“Green” recycling of the FPSO vessel is a process that seeks to minimize the environmental impacts of withdrawing obsolete ships from service, reducing the amount of waste and maximizing the recycling potential. MARS is an EU approved recycling facility that focuses on ensuring that ship recycling is carried out in a safe, sustainable manner and in compliance with international regulations. With the contracting of MARS by Shell, the recycling of FPSO “Fluminense” will be carried out in a more responsible and sustainable way.

Impact of Shell FPSO scrap on the energy sector
Scrap from Shell and other FPSOs is a growing problem in the energy sector, as the average vessel age is around 20 years, and many are approaching the end of their useful lives. Vessel removal and recycling requires taking responsible and sustainable measures to ensure the environment is not negatively impacted. The contracting of MARS by Shell to recycle the FPSO vessel “Fluminense” is a demonstration of the energy industry's commitment to adopting more responsible and sustainable practices for handling scrap from FPSOs.
