Due to the separation of the United Kingdom from the European Union, the shortage of truck drivers has been getting worse and the lack of drivers has caused the government to release professionals from other countries to fill job vacancies.

Europe has been suffering from a huge shortage of truck drivers, which affects the supply of various products. Concern about the impacts of this shortage of drivers is now a concern because winter is approaching on the continent. The lack of labor has made professionals more valued in Europe, which increases their salaries. To get an idea of the appreciation of professionals, a financial analyst currently earns around 46 pounds a year, in direct conversion, it's just over R$ 351.

Truck drivers can earn around £53 annually, which is equivalent to R$404 in direct conversion. This value is the one practiced by the supermarket chain Waitrose, which is offering job openings for professionals in the field.

How to be a truck driver abroad?

There are two ways to be a truck driver abroad, namely:

own account: To enter on your own and exercise a profession, it is necessary to obtain an EB2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) visa, specific for working in other countries. The NIW is a rule in the legislation that allows, for certain types of work visas, whose offer of vacancies is greater than the supply of manpower, the approval of the work visa by the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services), without going through DOL – Department of Labor clearance.

The value of the costs is relative, as it depends on the number of people in the truck driver's family who will immigrate, the costs to obtain a visa can vary from US$ 15 to US$ 20 (about R$ 80, in current conversion ) and the estimated time can reach up to a year and a half (18 months). Wife and children under 21 enter the same process as the father. The EB-2 Visa is a Green Card, that is, the truck driver who receives this visa will become a permanent resident in the USA, being able to enjoy almost all the benefits of an American citizen.

Employment contract: Through this method, there are no costs for the worker if the Employer/Sponsor (Company that will employ the driver) is willing to bear the costs of the process. And the waiting time to obtain an immigration authorization is slightly shorter. Through a previously closed employment contract with a carrier in the country, that is, when the company calls the foreign driver to work, the professional will need the H2B Visa. The costs to obtain this document range from US$ 10 to US$ 18 and are the sole responsibility of the contracting company.

British government accepts drivers from other countries

It is always seen that it is a big bureaucracy to enter some countries, mainly those in Europe, which in a way became much worse with the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Making the visa for truck drivers from outside Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England to have even more impasses.

On the other hand, the British government authorized the granting of temporary visas, generating job openings for more than 5 drivers. The professionals will have salaries around BRL 32 thousand per month, and will be able to work in the United Kingdom for three months.

It is worth noting that it is necessary to have a permit to drive a truck in Europe and it is also worth remembering that the steering wheel over there is on the right side, that is, the opposite of what we are used to here in Brazil.

US also suffers from driver shortage

In addition to Europe, the USA also suffers from a lack of truck drivers due to the pandemic, abandonment of the sector by some professionals and also due to an even more rigorous testing system that was responsible for the dismissal of more than 60 professionals in the country. country.

Some North American carriers are already begging the government to soften the rules and speed up the approval of visas so that job vacancies are offered to foreign truck drivers, causing the wear and tear in the supply networks to be alleviated. Petroleum Marketing Group only has 26 of the 74 drivers it needs to operate.

According to Andre LeBlanc, vice president of operations, the company tries to recruit professionals, but does not find anyone interested. One of the wholesalers even organized an event to attract people at a state convention center, but only two showed up.
