Siemens Energy aims to disseminate low carbon economy in its operations. In Brazil, the company has already reduced its emissions by 57% in the period from 2014 to 2020
With the aim of boosting the low-carbon economy inside and outside its operations, Siemens Energy announces a series of measures to promote sustainable development. The initiatives are being carried out in line with the company's strategy to integrate its business with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN, in particular SDG 13 (Action Against Global Climate Change).
Externally, in addition to solid partnerships with the government and class associations in Brazil, through its environmental portfolio, Siemens Energy has also helped customers around the world to reduce their emissions by more than 48 million tons of carbon dioxide during the fiscal year 2019 (October 01, 2018 to September 31, 2019), with activities and offerings grouped into three areas: increasing efficiency, hybridization and deep decarbonization.
Technologies Adopted
Along the entire energy value chain, the company helps customers adopt more sustainable energy technologies and solutions, such as building hybrid power plants that combine generation technologies with battery storage; gas turbines operating with up to 60% hydrogen; transmission equipment that avoids the use of SF6, a very harmful greenhouse gas, in addition to hydrogen electrolysers, which are essential for the development of a sustainable green hydrogen economy.

“In addition to providing technologies that help our customers to decarbonize their operations and meet the world's demand for affordable and reliable energy with excellence, for Siemens Energy it is essential to invest in initiatives that contribute to gradually achieving the neutralization of carbon emissions in our operations. To fulfill this commitment, we need a holistic approach, with short, medium and long term solutions that drive sustainable development,” says André Clark, General Manager of Siemens Energy Brasil.
Global Goal
Internally, to meet its global goal of becoming neutral in emissions by 2030, the company created an internal investment fund for CO2 neutralization projects, which will be fed back based on the pricing of emissions from its activities in the country. Brazil is the company's second location in the world to replicate this program, previously implemented in the United Kingdom.
Within the Internal Carbon Pricing program, each business area of the company will contribute with an amount proportional to the emissions of its operations, with 1 ton of carbon equivalent to USD 40. Of the amount collected by the fund, which already has a balance of more than R$700, part of the amount will be allocated to projects defined by the internal CO2 neutralization committee and another portion to initiatives indicated by the company's own employees.
In addition, within the company, energy efficiency solutions are being implemented in the company's own locations, such as the use of renewable energy at its headquarters in Brazil and the gradual replacement of the use of polluting fuels with alternatives that are less harmful to the environment. Additionally, a permanent task force was created to encourage discussions and decisions on decarbonization among employees, which include training for top management and workshops for the internal public on the importance and urgency of the topic.
