Finland: Opportunities in the Startup Ecosystem

Finland has emerged as a strategic and highly attractive destination for companies aiming to internationalize and business expansion, especially in the technology and innovation sectors. This phenomenon is not accidental; the Finnish ecosystem stands out for providing a fertile and conducive environment for the growth of global businesses, combining a solid infrastructure with strong business support. In seeking expansion opportunities and taking advantage of the advantages offered by this Nordic country, Gilberto Barroso founded a branch of his educational startup, De Criança Para Criança, in the city of Helsinki in March of this year, thus beginning the structuring of his expansion project.

Slush 2024: Opportunity for International Connections

'Establishing a presence here represents a milestone for De Criança Para Criança, which has been operating in Brazil since 2016, transforming students' stories into cartoons or narrated games. Finland is a world reference in education and, for us, serves as a distribution center for other European countries such as Germany, Denmark and Ukraine,' he comments. To facilitate this network of vital contacts and the exchange of innovative ideas, Slush 2024, scheduled to take place on November 20 and 21 in Helsinki, is set to be the main global event of startups in the world and an unmissable opportunity for Brazilian entrepreneurs to connect with the global market. It is estimated that the event will bring together more than 13.000 participants from 100 countries, of which 5.500 will be startups and 3.300 investors.

International Attraction at the Largest Global Startup Event

As highlighted by Annamari Soikkeli, Manager of International Startups and Permit Development at Business Finland, Slush is a valuable platform for entrepreneurs who want to network internationally and access an extremely solid technological innovation base, offering the chance to establish themselves in robust markets through strategic partnerships. With an impressive three trillion dollars in assets under management, Slush stands out not only as the world’s largest venture capital gathering, but also as a crucial catalyst for the next generation of great entrepreneurs. This year’s speakers include renowned names such as Javier Oliván, COO of Meta; Ann Mettler, Vice President for Europe at Breakthrough Energy; Jeffrey Rayport, Professor at Harvard Business School; and Carolina Aguilar, Co-Founder and CEO of INBRAIN Neuroelectronics.

Ease of Doing Business in Finland

Moving with his family to Finland, Gilberto highlights that opening a business in the country is a process made easier by the absence of the extensive bureaucracy he was familiar with in Brazil, allowing everything to happen in an accessible, practical and agile manner. De Criança Para Criança plans to invest around R$700 thousand in its infrastructure in Finland, with the expectation of increasing revenue between 30-40% and closing the year with a turnover of R$7 million. For Brazilian entrepreneurs aiming for international markets, Alessandra Leone, Talent Manager at Work in Finland, notes that Brazil already has a considerable number of startups prepared to explore the global context. Finland, in turn, offers a robust structure that includes startup acceleration programs, networking events for entrepreneurs and comprehensive support for global talent.

Community and Support for Women Entrepreneurs

Tássia Rebelo, founder of Secret Club, moved to Finland in 2021 and, faced with the challenges of isolation and remote work, turned this experience into a successful business. By creating a social community that serves as a meeting point for immigrant women, she offers a space for friendship and support. She shares that she always dreamed of having her own company and was able to launch this project by exploring several business support programs she found in Finland. By attending an entrepreneurship academy, she learned how to transform Secret Club into a sustainable business, using it as a case study. “Before, I organized meetups in cafes; now, we promote more personalized events,” she explains.

Innovation and Growth Potential in Finland

Finland is ranked among the ten most innovative countries in the world, according to the Global Innovation Index. The country is home to world-renowned brands such as Angry Birds, developed by Rovio Entertainment; Kone, a leader in the elevator and escalator sector; and Nokia, the famous multinational telecommunications company. This innovative landscape creates a fertile environment that provides space for entrepreneurs to develop new ideas and dream big. “Finland offers a stable business environment that is ideal for startups, especially as a testing ground for new technologies,” highlights Soikkeli. In addition, the country has a highly educated population, which has driven the success of the startup ecosystem, with strong expertise in digital technologies. They are at the forefront of emerging initiatives such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, 5G networks, and innovations in sustainable energy and biotechnologies.

Startup Support Services in Finland

'There are several soft-landing services for startups and relocation for founders and their families offered by Finnish cities and organizations,' Soikkeli points out, addressing those interested in moving to Finland. In addition, the country offers the Startup Permit, a specific residence visa for startup founders who have competent teams, innovative and scalable business ideas, and the necessary resources to start their business operations in Finland. Thus, the combination of a welcoming environment, strong institutional support and facilities for internationalization positions Finland as a privileged destination for the global startup event.
