New Fortress Energy opens Gás Sul Terminal in SC, with an investment of R$500 million; project expands natural gas supply, creates jobs and connects to the Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline.
New Fortress Energy celebrated the opening of South Gas Terminal, a significant milestone for energy supply in southern Brazil. This new venture, located in Santa Catarina, was made possible with an investment of R$500 million, reinforcing the company's commitment to regional development. In addition to expanding the supply of natural gas, Terminal Gás Sul promises to contribute significantly to local economic growth, generating new job opportunities and strengthening energy infrastructure.
O South Gas Terminal, located in Barbilonga Bay, in the city of São Francisco do Sul, is the first natural gas terminal opened by New Fortress Energy in Brazil and is connected to the important Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline. The investment in regasification terminal in Santa Catarina not only improves the availability of natural gas in the region, but also provides a solid foundation for future energy projects. This project is a crucial step towards ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of the Brazilian energy matrix.
The city of Joinville, located approximately 180 km from the capital Florianópolis, is the headquarters of the South Gas Terminal. With an investment of R$500 million, this terminal is the first for regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the southern region of Brazil and the eighth to operate in the country. This infrastructure is fundamental for diversification and security in the supply of natural gas.

South gas terminal and connection with the Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline
Terminal Gás Sul has a contract signed with TBG (Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolivia-Brasil) for the supply of natural gas. This terminal appears as a robust alternative to meet the demand for thermoelectric in the South, Southeast and Central-West regions. Furthermore, it plays an important role in the development of industries such as ceramics, metal mechanics and glass, subsequently distributing natural gas to various consumers.
Leandro Cunha, general director of NFE Brasil, highlights that, in addition to increasing gas supply security, the Gás Sul Terminal enables the diversification of supply for consumers, meeting the potential demand from new industries in the region. This expansion will contribute to the job generation and income, reinforcing the importance of the terminal for the local economy.
Capacities and operations of the Gás Sul Terminal
The connection of the Gás Sul Terminal, in Santa Catarina, with the Bolivia-Brazil Gas Pipeline, is considered a strategic opportunity. This connection allows the expansion of natural gas supply not only to the South, Southeast and Central-West regions, but also meets current industrial demand and growth forecasts, thus guaranteeing the country's energy security. Through the Natural Gas Terminal, NFE connects to a region with limitations in the supply of natural gas and to more than 3,5 GW of plants that do not have a constant supply of gas or long-term contracts.
The terminal will use the FRSU Winter ship (Floating Storage Regasification Unit), 277 meters long, as a gas processing unit. The ship has the capacity to store up to 138 thousand m³ of LNG, the equivalent of 83 million m³ of natural gas, and has the capacity to regasify up to 15 million m³ per day. This FRSU was sub-chartered from Petrobras and has a crew of 35 people from six different nationalities: Brazil, Croatia, Philippines, Romania, Russia, Indonesia and Spain.
Future initiatives and sustainability
From September 2024, the charter will be made directly from ENERGOS, the shipping company and owner of the FSRU. Regarding NFE's presence in Brazil, Terminal Gás Sul is the company's second major project in the country. In February, NFE opened an LNG import terminal in Baía do Marajó, in the municipality of Barcarena (PA), with an investment of R$300 million. This terminal will also be fundamental for two thermoelectric plants powered by natural gas that are being built by NFE, with investments expected to be around R$7 billion and the first phase expected to open in 2025.
The operation of FSRU-type units is globally recognized as one of the safest for the environment and surrounding communities. Faced with major climate changes and their potential impacts on society, the global community already considers natural gas as an ideal energy source for the transition to a 'low carbon' market.

He did not detail how much of an advantage it is for decarbonization in relation to photovoltaic plants, for example. And what is its power compared to electrical power. And what is the origin of this gas, if it is only from TBG, Bolivia/Brazil.
It is not a thermal power plant but an LNG gas terminal that will be connected to the TBG gas pipeline to increase supply capacity for the industry.
But I would also like to know the origin of LNG
