Authorities minimize tensions while analysts see a show of force amid the conflict in Ukraine!

According to examination, the movement of nuclear submarines in Cuba has generated global attention. Last Thursday, the Los Angeles-class USS Helena arrived on the island to face the four Russian warships, including the imposing Kazan submarine. This unusual visit is seen as an attempt by Moscow to show military might, especially amid growing Western support for Ukraine.

USS Helena and Kazan: Submarine giants face to face

O USS Helena (SSN-725), named after the city of Helena, Montana, is a nearly 110-meter vessel, equipped with technology stealth to minimize its detection by radar and sonar. Launched in 1986, the submarine is capable of carrying a variety of armaments, including torpedoes, cruise and ballistic missiles, which makes him a formidable force on the seas.

On the other hand, the Russian nuclear submarine Win, commissioned in 2021, measures more than 140 meters and has similar capabilities in terms of speed and firepower. Both vessels are prepared to attack missions, reconnaissance, surveillance and support of special forces for long periods, without the need for frequent resupply.

Strategic operations in Cuba

The presence of submarines in Cuba, although officially non-threatening according to Havana and Washington, is interpreted by many as a demonstration of force by Russia. O US Southern Command described the arrival of the USS Helena at Guantánamo Bay as part of a “routine port visit“, while the Kremlin downplayed concerns about the installation of a Russian military base on the island.

The submarine Win arrived at Havana on Wednesday, accompanied by frigate Admiral Gorshkov, an oil tanker and a rescue tug, after exercises in the Atlantic. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, stated that these are “normal practices for a major maritime power like Russia“, and that there is no cause for alarm.

Geopolitical context and global tension

The arrival of the submarines occurs at a delicate moment. Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the delivery of long-range weapons by the West to Ukraine, suggesting that Russia could respond by supplying weapons to other countries. This naval visit comes shortly after Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed support for Moscow and condemned US “geopolitical manipulation”.

As military US officials are closely monitoring the presence of the Russian ships but say they do not pose a direct threat. However, the move is a stark reminder of global tensions and the delicate balance of power between nations.

Technology and military capability

O USS Helena, with a crew of around 130 to 140 sailors, stands out for its advanced technology stealth and ability to long range attack. Equipped to deal with diverse threats, the submarine exemplifies the American defense strategy.

O Win, representing one of the newest additions to the Russian fleet, is not far behind in terms of technology and offensive capabilities. Russia has invested significantly in modernize your navy, and Kazan is a symbol of this effort, capable of operating in complex missions and for prolonged periods.

With this movement, both USA as for Russia make it clear that they continue to invest in their strategic military presence, using nuclear submarines as key pieces on their geopolitical chessboard.
