The supermarket sector is looking for young people in the military service to fill 357 open positions and boost formal hiring in the country.
According to information from Folha de São Paulo, Abras (Brazilian Supermarket Association) is preparing to launch a platform to connect young people who have left the Army with vacancies in the supermarket sector.
The tool will be presented at the end of May and seeks to combat the lack of labor, in addition to facilitating the entry of these young people into the job market.
Sector faces difficulty in hiring
According to Abras, there are 357 vacancies in supermarkets in Brazil. However, many chains have difficulty finding workers. Young people prefer more flexible working hours and higher salaries, which complicates hiring.

"The challenge lies mainly in the entry salary, which many consider low, but does not take into account the rights guaranteed by the signed employment contract and other benefits.“, says Márcio Milan, vice-president of Abras.
The new platform will gather information about jobs, salaries and career plans. The association also wants to intensify meetings with young people while they are still doing their mandatory military service, before the end of their service.
Pilot project shows good results
At the end of 2023, Abras started a pilot project in partnership with Grupo Pereira. Meetings were held between military commands and supermarkets to explain the opportunities.
The Pereira Group has already started recruiting new employees and has received applications from former Army personnel. We had an excellent reception, showing that there is also potential for growth in retail“, said Paulo Nogueira, the group’s Human Resources Director.
In addition, the sector already operates with hiring programs for people over 50, refugees and people leaving the penal system.
Partnerships expand to Navy and Air Force
Abras is negotiating with the Ministry of Defense to expand the initiative to the Navy and Air Force. In Rio de Janeiro, a similar partnership already exists.
Asserj (the Rio de Janeiro State Supermarkets Association) works with the Marine Corps, training former Navy personnel. More than 500 people have already been hired.
Another solution to the lack of workers was to look for candidates registered in the Single. In partnership with the Ministry of Social Development, the Carrefour group reserved 10% of vacancies for beneficiaries of social programs. In 2023, 53 thousand people were hired.
These workers keep part of the Bolsa Família benefit for up to 24 months, but the Lula government is discussing reducing this period to 6, 12 or 18 months.
