Named Jorge D, the tug was designed to offer high efficiency in ship handling operations in ports
Svitzer, a subsidiary of the Maersk group, recently announced the delivery and incorporation of the newest azimuthal unit (AZD) to its fleet of ship tugs in Brazil. The tug, called Jorge D and belonging to the Ramparts 2300 series, was designed to offer high efficiency in ship handling operations in ports, coastal towage and other general purpose towage services.
The ship tug Jorge D is part of a series of six tugs built by Estaleiro Rio Maguari (ERM), in Pará. It has been optimized to reach a speed of up to 13 knots and has a static thrust of 70 tons (bollard pull). This state-of-the-art vessel will allow Svitzer to offer efficient and reliable ship handling services in the ports where it operates.
Contribution to cleaner and more sustainable ship handling operations
Svitzer is committed to ambitious decarbonization targets and is constantly looking to improve its ship handling capabilities. The use of the Ramparts 2300 series ASD tugs allows the company to voluntarily comply with the marine pollution prevention recommendations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), paving the way for Svitzer to carry out cleaner and greener operations in Brazil.

Strengthening Svitzer's presence in Brazil
The incorporation of the ship tug Jorge D is considered an important step towards strengthening Svitzer's presence in the Brazilian maritime industry. The company recognizes the strategic importance of Brazil as a key country in the global import and export ecosystem, especially in the supply of food and raw materials.
The general director of Svitzer in Brazil, Daniel Reedtz Cohen, highlighted that the fleet was designed and built to support port operations, such as berthing, unberthing and escorting vessels, thereby reducing excessive energy consumption and meeting the needs of most vessels operating on the Brazilian coast.
