A machine that looks like something from a fictional film, but is pure reality: the Syncropter, also known as an interlaced rotor helicopter. This little thing is an invention of the German Anton Flettner, who also created the Flettner rotor, used on ships. But what makes Sincroptero so special?
O Syncropter has two rotors that rotate in opposite directions, preventing the helicopter rotate on its own axis. This eliminates the need for a tail rotor, making the helicopter lighter, with cheaper maintenance and less noisy.
But the trick is in the gears that synchronize the rotors, preventing them from colliding. It's a crazy business, right? Engineering innovating as always.
K-MAX: the silent giant of the skies
One of the most famous models of Syncropter is the K-MAX, developed by the company Kaman. This helicopter is a true aerial truck, capable of carrying up to 2700 kg – more than the weight of the aircraft itself!

And the best part: you do it all while spending less fuel than conventional helicopters. Charles Kaman, the founder of the Kaman Aircraft Company, not only perfected the Syncropter, but also ventured into the world of music.
Why don't we see more syncropterans around?
Despite all the advantages, the Syncroptera are not as fast as helicopters conventional. They also have some movement limitations close to the ground, because of the height of the blade tips.
But NASA keep an eye on this technology to urban transport, so who knows what the future holds? A Kaman Aircraft Company decided to stop producing the K-MAX in January 2023, but that doesn't mean the end of the Syncropters. The demand for these incredible machines can bring back production at any time.
