New biofuel agreement confirms companies' commitment to sustainability and innovation
The renowned Ternium Brasil, avant-garde in the production of flat steel in Latin America, together with Gás Verde, the largest producer of biomethane in the region, recently announced a new and promising partnership for the supply of biomethane. The announcement took place during a meeting at the industrial center of Santa Cruz, located in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The power of biomethane: a 100% renewable fuel
Biomethane is a completely renewable energy source, capable of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an impressive 99,9%. Produced from biogas, originating from landfill waste, this fuel has the potential to be used in industrial production processes and to fuel vehicles. It emerges as a viable and sustainable alternative to diesel, LPG, fuel oil, natural gas and gasoline.
Innovation as a key to sustainability
Marcelo Chara, president of Ternium Brasil, highlighted that “Ternium believes that sustainability is the engine for development and innovation. In 2019, we were the first company to use biomethane in steel production. Now, with the new agreement, we reinforce the commitment to use gas from garbage that benefits companies, society, the environment and the surrounding community”.

Ternium and biomethane: a productive partnership
The biomethane supplied by Gás Verde to Ternium Brasil is produced at the Seropédica Landfill (RJ), considered the largest in Latin America, and is effectively used in the steelworks' production process. Ternium leads the sector by being the first company in Latin America to use biomethane in its production.

“Our mission is to help companies move forward on their NetZero journeys. We are committed to the energy transition and we are sure that biomethane is the most efficient option, which eliminates the need for compensation, since it actually reduces the emissions of companies”, said the CEO of Gás Verde, Marcel Jorand.
Getting to know Ternium Brazil
Ternium Brasil is among the leaders in the production of flat steel in Latin America. Its plant, located in the industrial district of Santa Cruz, has been operating since 2017 and has the capacity to produce five million tons of steel plates per year. The company employs approximately 8 people, more than 60% of whom are residents of the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Ternium invests more than R＄ 10 million per year in the socioeconomic development of the region through social projects focused on education, directly benefiting more than 9 thousand people.
Gás Verde and its contribution to a more sustainable world
A leading producer in Latin America, Gás Verde produces and markets biomethane derived from biogas from landfills. From 2024, the company plans to produce green CO2, further contributing to sustainability. Gás Verde is part of the Urca Energia Group, a conglomerate of investments in smart and sustainable energy, which also includes the companies Eva Energia, Urca Trading and Urca Gás.
