US state has significant disagreements with the federal government
Texas is a large American state with approximately 700 square kilometers and a population of around 30 million inhabitants. It is located in the south of the United States and was once part of Mexico in ancient times. However, the separatist movement emerged, and in 1845, Texas was incorporated into the North American country.
However, the Texan people have a culture, customs, philosophies and economy very different from the rest of the North American country. As such, all these issues are culminating in a new separatist movement seeking independence from the state. But, after all, what are the real reasons for this separation? Is Texas able to stand on its own? Discover all this in today's article.

Texas is divided into counties and its culture is a reflection of Spanish colonization.
Texas is the second largest state within the United States and is subdivided into 254 distinct counties, which would be the union of some cities that form small regions. Each county is managed by a council made up of 5 members: a judge and four officials. However, these people must be from the county itself and have been chosen by the population.

This type of organization is a reflection of the culture, mainly left by colonization, which was carried out by Spaniards, when the state was still part of Mexico. However, in 1836 Texas conquered the separation from Mexico and began some movements to incorporate itself into the United States. However, only in 1845 was the effective incorporation.
However, the big blow came when he understood that only state lines separated Texans from an entirely different culture. After all, the people of Texas had their generations based on more traditional customs and based on the Catholic religion. In addition, the state has always had a conservative majority, while other states around it are more progressive.
Reasons Texas Wants to Secede from the United States
Now we enter the central factor of this matter: the real reasons for the separation of Texas from the United States. Here is a list of some of the main factors:
- Differences in beliefs, cultures and philosophies in relation to the country;
- Higher federal tax contributions with lower returns;
- More conservative and republican positioning, while the other states are mixed or democratic;
- Feeling of lack of representation of the state in the federal government.
After all, could Texas survive on its own?
Texas is the second largest state in the United States, as we mentioned earlier. Furthermore, he has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) really impressive: 2 trillion dollars. In this sense, to have an idea, the GDP of the whole of Brazil together reaches only 1 trillion and 600 billion dollars.
And do you know why this GDP is so high?
The state of Texas has 227 farms, more than any other US state, and is the largest cattle producer in the United States. In addition, it has huge reserves of oil, natural gas and derivatives, the largest in the country. Therefore, it also plays an important role in the production of oil and derivatives.
Furthermore, it is the largest electricity producing state in the United States. However, their energy sources are not renewable:
- 50% from thermoelectric plants;
- 40% from coal plants;
- 10% from nuclear power plants.
That is, Texas is fully capable of supporting itself.
State economy has great impasse in relation to the federal government of the United States
Texas is one of the least taxed places in the entire United States and one of only seven states in America not to levy state income tax. In addition, the “ICMS”, or tax on products, it is only 8,25% per unit, regardless of type and location within the state.
A major clash between the state and federal government is the amount they pay in taxes and how much they receive in return, which they claim is disproportionate. For example: for every $1 that Texas collected in taxes on state territory, the federal government gave them back about $0,60, through government programs and the like.
In this way, Texans have the idea that they are paying for the development of other states. And that's one of the main reasons, in addition to the different philosophies, that Texas is seeking independence.
Brazil also has states that provide higher tax quotas than others: SP, MG and RJ
Based on the analyzes of recent years by the Federal Revenue Service, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Rio de Janeiro are the Brazilian states that most contribute to the transfer of taxes to the government. According to data from the Comptroller General of the Union, we had the following values in 2021:
- São Paulo: R$538,3 billion;
- Rio de Janeiro: R$198,5 billion;
- Minas Gerais: R$80,9 billion.
When compared with the money received in federal programs, works and other attributes, there is a big cliff:
- São Paulo: R$47,2 billion;
- Rio de Janeiro: R$45,5 billion;
- Minas Gerais: R$40,0 billion.
These data extracted from the survey carried out in 2021 by the Federal Revenue and General Controllership of the Union (CGU) point to the great chasm that exists in the distribution of taxes. Furthermore, data from the same year indicate that the North and Northeast regions of Brazil were the ones that contributed the least with taxes and the ones that received the most government investments.
However, although many people feel aggrieved by this national tax distribution, separatist movements have not yet gained the strength to maintain themselves. However, in the south of Brazil, some enthusiasts created the “the south is my country” movement, but it also seems not to be taken very seriously.
