Multinationals Shell, Galp, Petrobras and Equinor sign natural gas contracts with Companhia de Gás da Bahia

In addition to the multinationals Shell, Galp and Equinor, the Brazilian oil giant Petrobras also signed a new contract with Companhia de Gás da Bahia to supply the input from January

As of January 1, 2022, the Bahia Gas Company – Bahiagás, which has always had Petrobras as its supplier, now receives natural gas from new companies. The contracts with the multinationals Shell, Galp and Equinor, winners of the Public Call started last June, have already been signed and will come into force from the beginning of the year. In parallel, as a result of bilateral negotiations, contracts were signed with PetroReconcavo and Origin, which will also start in 2022.

In addition to them, the Petrobras, which also participated in the Public Call and already acted as a supplier to Bahiagás, will sign a new contract with the Company for supply starting in January. The entry of the state-owned company among the winners of the selection process took place after the withdrawal of Compass, which until then was among those selected.

With the new contracts, Bahiagás, which since the beginning of its activities had Petrobras as its main supplier, now receives natural gas supplied by eight different companies, including the state-owned company. This means that, starting next year, more than 70% of the energy purchased by Bahiagás will be delivered by new suppliers, with around 26% coming from the Onshore (land production) baiano.

Bahia's Secretary of Infrastructure, Marcus Cavalcanti, believes that once the contracts are signed, the price of gas can become more competitive and encourage the state's economy. “As part of the State Government's public policy to look for suppliers of natural gas at a lower price, Bahiagás held a Public Call and managed to offer the gas molecule at a better price to the population of Bahia and, mainly, to the industries, which are the biggest consumers. The Government's directive for Bahiagás to acquire natural gas from wells and fields in the Onshore baiano also allowed the economic viability for small entrepreneurs to acquire wells at the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) auctions or directly from Petrobras, through the plan to demobilize assets on land”, emphasizes the secretary.

“We are ending the year with yet another success in terms of supply. After our last Public Call, we have eight suppliers and nine signed contracts. As a result, we have the most diversified natural gas acquisition portfolio in the country and we are less dependent on Petrobras”, highlighted the CEO of Bahiagás, Luiz Gavazza.

Companhia de Gás da Bahia is a pioneer in Brazil in the process of diversifying natural gas supply sources

Bahiagás is a pioneer in the country in the process of diversifying natural gas supply sources. In 2007, the Company signed its first contract with an independent producer, the ERG Consortium, which explored a well on the island of Itaparica, in Bahia.

Furthermore, Bahiagas it was the first state concessionaire of piped natural gas to carry out a Public Call for the acquisition of the energy source. The initiative drew the attention of the market and served as a reference for new public calls for bids by other distributors in the segment.

“Since then, we have been experimenting and developing this instrument for the acquisition of natural gas with more competitive prices and conditions. The practice worked so well that, in 2021, we completed our fourth Public Call”, added Gavazza.
