The scenario of a drop in cases of Covid-19 was pointed out by the indicators of the Special Committee for Monitoring and Combating the Pandemic in Macaé.

The municipality of Macaé, known as the City of Petroleum, in Rio de Janeiro, has zero occupancy of patients in infirmary and ICU beds for Covid-19 and the positivity rate of new cases has been reduced by half. Therefore, Mayor Welberth Rezende signed a decree which exempts the use of mask in open and closed environments. The announcement was made on the manager's social media.

The decision was taken in view of the scenario of a drop in the main indicators of the pandemic in Macaé, analyzed over the last 15 days by the Special Committee for Monitoring and Combating the Covid-19 Pandemic. Thus, the flexibility of health protocols for coping with the disease is expanded. The vaccinated population in Macaé reached 68%, considering both doses and a single dose of the vaccine.

In the decree signed by Rezende, however, there is the recommendation for the use of facial protection in public transport, schools, banks, health units, bus stations, airports and ports; and by immunosuppressed people, with symptoms of respiratory diseases, pregnant women and the elderly.

Mayor of Macaé asks for collaboration from the population

The mayor of Macaé, Welberth Rezende, asked the population to continue collaborating with safety standards and thanked them. “Macaé had an average of half the deaths that happened in the rest of the state. It was certainly thanks to this partnership with the University (Federal of Rio de Janeiro), the scientific committee and the population that joined and participated directly in the entire campaign”, highlighted the manager.

So far, the state of Rio de Janeiro has recorded 72.591 deaths from Covid-19 and about 2.700 cases currently. According to the epidemiological bulletin of the municipality of Macaé, Cidade do Petróleo, 823 deaths from the disease were recorded.

Why is Macaé the National Petroleum City?

In the early 1970s, Macaé began to experience a new economic moment with the discovery of the oil in Campos Basin, Brazilian continental shelf. Thus, there was a great boost to the local economy, with the interest of Petrobras, which settled in the municipality.

In this way, Macaé made Brazil contribute to Brazil becoming one of the most advanced countries in deep water prospecting for oil extraction in the country, making the city known as the City of Petroleum.

It is in Macaé that several facilities of Petrobras and companies in the offshore sector are located. From the basin are extracted 80% of the Brazilian oil and 47% of the production of gas native of the country.
