Expectations are good for the shipbuilding sector in Northern Brazil, which expect a significant increase in demand for gas tankers within 3 to 4 years.

As widely publicized by the government, which has already launched the Novo Mercado de Gás, the expectation of achieving a more affordable price for the consumer will trigger a chain reaction that will benefit shipbuilding and shipping companies in the north of Brazil. Detroit de Itajaí Shipyard, in Santa Catarina, launches an unprecedented vessel to transport live fish.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG) market continues to be one of the most discussed topics in the energy sector. The demand for ships to transport the gas and for gasification units, which despite being imported will generate demand for assembly in the country.

Therefore, some shipyards in the North of Brazil have already started to receive queries from shipping agencies about their production capacity and know-how for building this type of ship.

Know how

Naval construction in the north of the country has a lot of experience in manufacturing convoys in specific tanks or in “gasteineres” (containers suitable for transporting gas).

According to the shipyards, their workforce already has the expertise in the construction of convoys and, only in relation to the manufacture of large regasification units should they be done by larger shipyards.

Shipyards such as Beconal Bertolini Construções and Rio Maguari were some of those consulted. They hope to prepare even more to meet the demand which, according to their executives, should happen within 3 to 4 years.

Shipping agencies such as Elcano, which already operates in the operation of ships LNG and LPG (LNG carriers), is keeping an eye on the opportunities that are to come with the changes in the Brazilian energy matrix and expects more stable and lasting legal and regulatory rules from the authorities.

Shipbuilding expects that with the increase in gas transport demand, shipyards in the northern region will be able to deliver gas-powered tugboats and fluvial ships to shipowners, as the technology even for small vessels is already widely disseminated among designers and engine builders.
