A merchant ship was found adrift in the Atlantic in 1872 with no sign of its crew. The story remains one of the greatest mysteries in maritime navigation.
On December 4, 1872, a mystery began to unfold in the Atlantic. Sailors on a Canadian brigantine (type of vessel used for various purposes) they saw the ship in the distance Mary Celeste, apparently adrift, about 400 miles (approx. 644 km) east of the Azores.
What appeared to be a seaworthy and well-stocked ship was completely empty. There was no one on board. No captain, no crew, no passengers. Just the ship and the silence of the ocean.
This event began one of the greatest enigmas of story maritime.”What happened to the ten people who were on board the Mary Celeste?” is a question that echoes to this day among scholars of nautical mysteries.

The journey of the ship that made history
Originally called Amazon, the ship was built in 1861 in Nova Scotia. Initially, it led an ordinary life, transporting cargo across the Atlantic, between the West Indies, England and the Mediterranean.
But after some setbacks and even a shipwreck in Cape Breton, it was purchased by Richard W. Haines, an American businessman, who restored it and renamed it Mary Celeste.
In the fall of 1872, the ship was loaded with 1.701 barrels of industrial alcohol, bound for Genoa, Italy.
Benjamin Spooner Briggs, the captain of the Mary Celeste, left New York accompanied by his wife, his two-year-old daughter and seven crew members.
On board, they faced stormy seas, but the logbook was last filled out on November 25 of that year. From then on, there was silence.
The encounter of the abandoned ship
It was only nine days later that the I gave thanks found the Mary Celeste. Captain David Morehouse, intrigued, decided to investigate.
The ship was in excellent condition to sail, with its cargo intact. However, the lifeboat was missing, and the crew appeared to have abandoned ship under unknown circumstances.
Morehouse took the ship to Gibraltar and reported the incident to the local authorities. From there, he sent a telegram to the Atlantic Mutual Insurance Company, describing the condition of the ship. Mary Celeste.
The mystery took over the American press. There was speculation about mutinies, piracy or even the involvement of the transported alcohol.
Theories and mysteries
The crew of the Mary Celeste.
In Gibraltar, investigations ruled out any wrongdoing, but that did not calm curious minds. Journalists and writers began to create increasingly elaborate versions to explain the mystery.
Renowned writer Arthur Conan Doyle even wrote a fictional story called “The Declaration of J. Habakuk Jephson“, suggesting that the crew was attacked by an African group. Although creative, the theory lacked any concrete evidence.
Decades later, new investigations pointed to more plausible hypotheses.
A Smithsonian documentary suggested that Captain Briggs ordered the ship evacuated due to problems with the water pumps, which were clogged with coal residue from a previous voyage.
He may have believed that the Mary Celeste was about to sink, but hasty evacuation would have led to tragedy.
A riddle that will never be solved
As the years passed, stories about the Mary Celeste have mixed with fiction and folklore. Despite the numerous theories, the lack of survivors or concrete evidence keeps the mystery alive.
O Mary Celeste remains a symbol of intrigue and imagination, sailing in a sea of unanswered questions.
Just like the winds that carried it adrift, the mystery of its missing crew will continue to blow through the pages of history.
Our world is full of mysteries, if they were solved they wouldn't be mysteries, and this is one of them...
A ship without a crew, and appearing intact, could mean that people simply abandoned the vessel, as the use of the lifeboat, which serves as a transfer to or from the boat, was noticed, but gentlemen, this is just another theory about this fateful naval event.
