In a surprising decision, the Brazilian Navy announced the concession of the Almirante Jurandyr da Costa Müller de Campos Ammunition Factory to the private sector. The unit, located in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, is responsible for the production of medium and large caliber ammunition for the Brazilian Armed Forces.

The concession, which will last 20 years, aims to modernize the infrastructure and expand the factory's export capacity, generating new revenue and jobs. The news was released during an event in São Paulo, which was attended by international executives.

According to the newspaper Metrópoles, in article published this Saturday (27), the factory, managed by the Naval Project Management Company (Emgepron) since 1996, was founded in 1982 and plays a crucial role in supplying Brazilian military forces.

In addition to the domestic market, the factory exports ammunition to countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. The tender for the concession should be launched later this year, with the contract expected to run until 2044.

During the presentation of the proposal, representatives from the Navy and Emgepron provided details about the concession plan to executives from countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy and Israel.

According to the Metrópoles portal, lawyer Márcio Gea, from Motta Fernandes, who represents Emgepron in the contract, highlighted the strategic importance of the concession.

“The factory is one of the main producers of military artifacts in the world. And, from its concession to the private sector, it will certainly generate more revenue for the country thanks to its exports and generate even more jobs”, stated Gea.

The decision to grant the operation of the factory to the private sector is part of a larger effort by navy to modernize your facilities and increase production efficiency.

According to Metrópoles, this initiative seeks not only to improve infrastructure, but also to increase the factory's competitiveness in the international ammunition market. The expectation is that, with private investment, the factory will be able to increase its production capacity and explore new markets.

In addition to the economic benefits, the concession should also bring technological advances to the factory. A Emgepron and the Navy hope that the new private partner will bring innovations that can be applied to the production of ammunition, making Brazil an important player in the global defense market.

According to Metrópoles, the executives present at the event showed interest in the proposal, highlighting the growth potential of the Brazilian defense market.
