Offshore industry has the environmental issue in its regulatory standards, which leveraged the development of new, more efficient and ecological technologies.

Just one liter of common used lubricating oil can pollute one million liters of water; or form a film of 5000m², thus causing disastrous consequences for the environment. In this way, the Offshore sector has been seeking a new way to guarantee the operation of machinery without affecting the fauna and flora of the oceans.

In addition, the Offshore industry has the environmental issue in its regulatory standards, which has driven the development of new, more efficient and ecological technologies. One of these innovative technologies is Kluber and Rocol's special biodegradable lubricants. “The Offshore facilities have grown a lot and very fast. Unfortunately, the number of accidents as well. To avoid serious damage to the environment, countries require companies to use products that, if they leak, do not cause too much damage to animals and corals in the region”, explains Luiz Maldonado, CEO of Lubvap, distributor of lubrication solutions.

Eco-friendly lubricants are developed with chemical substances that allow them to be decomposed by microorganisms

Ecological lubricants, as the oils used to guarantee the high performance of machines are called, are developed with chemical substances that allow them to be decomposed by microorganisms. It is a product that undergoes tests in certified laboratories and 60% of the material in its composition must disappear within 28 days. “In addition to being biodegradable, ecological lubricants maintain their performance equal to the common one and require fewer products to deliver the same efficiency”, completes Luiz.

One of the main contaminating agents present in common lubricants are heavy metals, which are toxic to living beings. The common lubricating oil contains high levels of hydrocarbons and metals - iron, lead, zinc, copper, chromium, nickel and cadmium which, when discarded incorrectly or leaked, can be absorbed by animal and vegetable tissues, which also causes a serious danger to public health.

It is estimated that around 25 million tons are dumped into the oceans every year, according to the International Solid Waste Association. Of this number, 80% come from cities and 12,5 million tons are plastic. The impacts are environmental, economic, tourism and health.
