Toyota Mirai breaks world record by traveling 1.360 kilometers on a full tank of hydrogen
The Toyota Mirai sedan set a new benchmark for hydrogen efficiency, completing a 1360,378 km round trip in Southern California on a single 5,65 kg tank of hydrogen. Toyota reinforces its idea that hydrogen vehicles are as efficient as electric cars.

For reference, the US EPA test cycle gives the vehicle an estimated range of 646 km – a number that the new distance exceeds by more than 110%, although there is no indication as to the average speed at which the vehicle traveled to reduce consumption and break the record.
The race was conducted over two days in August 2021, however, it was not officially verified by the Guinness Book of World Records, until this week. The mark exceeds the previous record (although verified by another entity, not by Guinness), obtained in May in France by another Toyota Mirai, with a distance of 1003 km.

The Mirai Sedan – which is one of several other hydrogen cars available on the market – was launched in the first-generation look in 2015, with the second-generation version coming in 2020.
Companies rent Toyota hydrogen-powered cars
Currently, 20 examples are registered for Australian roads and are leased to local companies on three-year/$1750 per month contracts. Hydrogen cell technology has several distinct advantages over battery electric vehicles – such as greater range and shorter 'recharge' times.

Toyota wants to prove the autonomy of hydrogen cars
With the new Mirai Sedan record, Toyota wants to prove that hydrogen-powered cars are as good as electric vehicles, and the automaker insists on this. They even tested a hydrogen-powered Corolla in several endurance races in Japan.
But with that new record, it might be enough to convince people to opt for hydrogen-powered cars over electric ones.
The fate of Toyota's cars is still uncertain for now, but it does show that hydrogen fuel cell owners won't have to worry about range considering how far it is capable of going on a single full tank.
Toyota Mirai emitted zero carbon during its two-day journey
On Day 2, Warne Gerdes and Bob Winger took the Mirai to local driving circuits and managed to log a total of 600 kilometers. The vehicle also drove through morning and afternoon traffic on the San Diego Highway between Orange County and Los Angeles. Thus, the Toyota Mirai completed a journey of 1.360 kilometers in total without refueling the tank. During the two-day trip, the company focused on efficient driving.
The Mirai consumed 5,65 kg of hydrogen, equivalent to 244 km per gallon of gasoline, while emitting water as the only by-product. The 2021 Toyota Mirai price starts at $49.500. In the two days of trying the world record, the vehicle did not emit any CO2. The company also mentions, that a normal vehicle with a standard combustion engine would have produced more than 300 kilos of carbon dioxide to travel the same distance.
In achieving a world record, Toyota Motor North America Executive Vice President Bob Carter said, “In 2016, the Toyota Mirai was the first production fuel cell electric vehicle available for retail sale in North America, and now the next generation Mirai is setting distance records.
