If you dream of becoming a master or doctor in Visual Arts, this is your big chance! UNICAMP has just opened 35 vacancies for its renowned postgraduate program. With a CAPES rating of 5, this could be your gateway to a prestigious academic and artistic career.

A State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) is accepting applications for the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts (PPGAV), offering 35 places for the second semester of 2025.

If you are an artist, researcher or professional in the visual arts field, this is a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge and advance your academic and artistic career.

The program, which has a grade 5 in the CAPES evaluation, stands out as one of the main gateways for those who want to build a successful career on the national scene.

With a focus on excellent academic training, UNICAMP's PPGAV offers places for master's and doctorate degrees, with the aim of promoting critical and innovative thinking in the areas of visual arts.

With 26 vacancies open for general competition and 9 vacancies for Affirmative Actions, the selection process will be conducted with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

One of the greatest references in Visual Arts in Brazil

PPGAV was created in 2011 and, since then, has consolidated itself as a center of excellence in teaching and research in visual arts.

The program aims to articulate contemporary artistic production with critical thinking, exploring theories, practices and the history of visual arts.

To this end, it relies on a highly qualified teaching staff and a robust curricular structure, formed by different lines of research.

The program's research lines are designed to address diverse questions and fields of study, providing a dynamic and enriching environment for students.

The main lines of research include:

  • Visual Poetics and Creative Processes: investigation of creative practices and the ways in which artists develop their productions.
  • History, Theory and Criticism of Visual Arts: study of theoretical, historical and critical approaches to art, focusing on the social, political and cultural transformations that influence artistic production.

These lines allow candidates to specialize in areas that most interest them, in addition to contributing to the advancement of visual arts in Brazil and around the world.

Interested parties can consult the official website for more details about the program and lines of research: UNICAMP PPGAV.

Masters and PhD vacancies: commitment to inclusion

The 2025 selection process will have 35 vacancies, of which 26 of them are for general competition, representing 75% of the vacancies, while 9 vacancies, or 25%, are reserved for candidates who qualify for Affirmative Actions.

This is a big step towards the inclusion of black, brown and indigenous people in academia, a commitment that PPGAV assumes with diversity in its composition and in the academic environment.

According to the notice, the program has adopted affirmative actions in its selection process since 2021, a movement that follows the growing trend of valuing diversity in Brazilian universities.

UNICAMP therefore seeks to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enter higher education, regardless of their origin.

Who can apply?

The selection process is open to candidates with training in any area of knowledge.

What matters, for admission to the master's or doctorate, is the adherence of the research project to the objectives of the Postgraduate Program in Visual Arts at UNICAMP.

For a master's degree, the candidate must have an undergraduate degree, while for a doctorate, both an undergraduate and a master's degree are required.

This flexibility broadens the possibilities for those who can apply, allowing people from different areas of training to enter the visual arts with a project that dialogues with the program's research fields.

This openness offers more diversity and innovation, fundamental elements for the development of the area.

How does the application and selection process work?

Registration for the 2025 PPGAV will be carried out in two distinct stages:

  1. From February 28 to March 28, 2025: Candidates must register on the Academic Management System (SIGA), an online platform at UNICAMP.
  2. From April 1 to 9, 2025: The second stage consists of filling out the form and including the necessary documents on the UNICAMP Institute of Arts platform.

After registration, the selection process will take place in two phases:

  1. First phase (elimination and qualifying): Evaluation of the research project and other materials submitted by candidates.
  2. Second phase (elimination and classification): In-person theoretical test and interview with oral presentation of the research project.

This selection structure allows for a careful analysis of both the candidates’ ideas and projects and their academic preparation.

The two phases will ensure that the best candidates, with projects aligned with the program’s needs, are selected.

Tips for preparing for the selection

To stand out in the selection process, it is essential that the candidate dedicates special attention to the development of his/her research project.

It is important that the project is clearly linked to the program's research lines, demonstrating originality, relevance and viability within the field of visual arts.

Furthermore, preparation for the theoretical test and the interview is essential to ensure good performance.

The theoretical test will cover topics such as art history, visual arts theory, and contemporary artistic production, while the interview will allow the candidate to present and defend their project.
