A new Toyota factory in Sorocaba is about to be opened, with the aim of doubling car production alongside the current factory already installed in the city. The president of Toyota in Brazil, Evandro Maggio, announced the news this Wednesday (5), highlighting that the new unit should generate thousands of job openings.
This significant investment reflects Toyota's commitment to expanding its operations in Brazil, boosting the local economy and creating job opportunities in the region. According to the executive in an interview with journalists, the project for the new Toyota factory in Sorocaba ends in 2026. The multinational, basically, aims to mirror the plant. In current numbers, the factory in the city has the capacity to produce 175 thousand vehicles per year. In the city, the company produces sports utility cars. The new Toyota factory in Sorocaba promises to generate 8 thousand jobs at Toyota, in reality it is a transfer, with the Indaiatuba unit being closed and transferred to Sorocaba.
The closure of the unit in Indaiatuba generated a manifesto from the unit's workers, as well as the category's union. The Indaiatuba unit, or Indaiá, as it is called, produces 76 thousand vehicles per year.
With the change, the new Toyota factory in Sorocaba promises to generate around 8 thousand jobs and hiring through Toyota's own selection platform should start in the second half of 2025. This is because the new factory should start operating in the first half of 2026, when the gradual closure of the Indaiatuba unit takes place.
New Toyota factory in Sorocaba receives billion-dollar investments
Toyota announced at the beginning of March an investment plan of 11 billion reais in Brazil until 2030. Maggio stated that of the 11 billion reais in the brand's investment plan, around R$5 billion will be used to expand Toyota's new factory in Sorocaba and transfer of operations from Indaiatuba to the complex, in addition to the launch of two cars, a compact hybrid in 2025 and another vehicle that will come after the expanded factory is ready in 2026.
It is worth mentioning that in 2020, the company made the same decision with the São Bernardo do Campo unit, in ABC Paulista, closed the unit in September 2021 and moved the operations of this plant to Sorocaba.
Basically all sectors of the ABC unit moved to Sorocaba, such as the marketing, human resources, commercial, purchasing, legal and financial areas. The unit's built area was 6,2 square meters. The complex that housed these areas in ABC was sold.
Will Toyota sell old unit?
Asked about local press publications regarding the eventual sale of the unit in Indaiatuba to Chinese car manufacturers, May stated that it is not the company's focus at the moment, but acknowledged that the tendency is for the automaker to get rid of the unit.
It would not be the first time that an Asian group took over a vehicle factory from an automaker established in Brazil. Ford sold its factory in Camaçari (BA) to BYD and Mercedes-Benz sold a factory in the interior of SP to the Chinese company GWM.
Toyota's factory in ABC was the oldest in Brazil, outside of Japan, the automaker established itself in the city in 1962, where it produced the iconic Bandeirante utility vehicle, manufactured until 2001, with just over 103 thousand units manufactured.
