São Paulo faces a crisis in education with more than 9 thousand vacancies for teachers and assistants open: find out about all the available positions!

The municipal education network of São Paulo, one of the largest in Brazil, is on alert. Currently, the Municipal Department of Education of São Paulo (SME-SP) faces a deficit of more than 9.400 teaching and teaching assistant positions. This critical situation directly affects more than 1 million students who depend on the public system to receive a quality education. The need for new professionals is urgent, especially in the areas of early childhood education and elementary education. Even after recent competitions, most of these positions are being filled by temporary teachers, which does not definitively resolve the issue.

The SME-SP, which manages a vast network of schools in São Paulo, is dealing with a shortage of permanent teachers in several subjects. The most affected are Portuguese, Mathematics, Science and Geography, but the shortage of educators also extends to specific areas, such as Biology, Chemistry and Libras. In addition, the shortage of Technical Education Assistants (ATE) exceeds 1.700 vacancies, showing that the problem is not limited to teachers, but also to pedagogical support professionals. Despite previous efforts, there is still a great dependence on professionals hired on a temporary basis.

These temporary contracts are a stopgap solution, but they cannot guarantee the stability and continuity that public education requires. In the long term, this can negatively affect the quality of education, harming students' academic performance. City Hall of São Paulo recently held competitions that recruited more than 7 professionals, but the number is still insufficient to meet the growing demand for qualified educators. The crisis may also be aggravated by legislation that restricts the holding of competitions in election years, which limits hiring and worsens the situation.

How many vacancies are open and what are the positions?

According to data obtained through the Access to Information Law, requested by a visitor to the Collaborate Contests website, the deficit of vacancies in the São Paulo education network exceeds 9 thousand positions. The main shortages are in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Education and Elementary School Teacher I (PEIF I): 5.237 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Portuguese: 240 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Mathematics: 380 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Science: 345 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – History: 125 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Geography: 376 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – English: 421 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Arts: 293 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Physical Education: 253 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Biology: 5 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Chemistry: 4 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Physics: 4 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Spanish: 3 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Sociology: 4 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Philosophy: 2 vacancies
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Sign Language: 8 vacancies
  • Technical Education Assistant (ATE): 1.706 vacancies

This data shows the extent of the problem. The greatest demand is for early childhood education and elementary school I teachers, who together represent more than half of the total number of open positions.

How will hiring be carried out?

Given this situation, many are wondering how the city plans to deal with the shortage of professionals. Due to restrictions imposed during election years, the opening of new public examinations may be limited, which creates a challenge for the public administration. However, the expectation is that new selection processes will be opened in the coming months, with a focus on permanent hiring. Temporary teachers continue to be hired, but the definitive solution will only be achieved with the implementation of new public examinations.

Candidates selected for the positions must meet the specific requirements for each position. For early childhood education and elementary school I teachers, a degree in Pedagogy or a specific degree is required to work in basic education. For elementary school II and high school subjects, it is necessary to have a degree in the specific area of activity. In addition, candidates must pass an objective test and assessment of qualifications, common stages in public examinations for the education sector.

When will registrations and enrollments take place?

Currently, there is no set date for new public selection processes. However, the City of São Paulo is aware of the urgency and seriousness of the problem. The last selection process held called for more than 7 teachers, but due to high demand, new calls are expected in the coming months. It is essential that interested parties keep an eye on future notices, which will be published on the official SME-SP website and other official city hall communication channels.

Applications for the competitions are usually made online, through specific platforms provided by the city government. Candidates should pay attention to the publication dates of the notices so as not to miss the opportunity to compete for the vacancies. In addition, it is important that interested professionals start preparing now, reviewing the content required in previous tests, which usually include questions about pedagogical knowledge and content specific to the area of activity.

How to register for upcoming competitions?

To participate in the next competitions and fill one of the more than 9.400 vacancies in the municipal network of São Paulo, candidates must follow the updates on the official website of SME-SP and on the competition portals. Applications are usually made online, and deadlines are announced in advance. At the moment, there is still no official schedule, but new notices are expected to be released soon to meet the growing need for education professionals.
