The video that shook Venezuela
On Tuesday (30), a video involving captains Javier and Juan Carlos Nieto Quintero took to social media and quickly spread across the internet.

In the video, the captains call on the Venezuelan Armed Forces to recognize Edmundo González as the new elected president, challenging the authority of current president Nicolás Maduro.
“We, captains Javier and Juan Carlos Nieto Quintero, members of the Batalla de Mosquitero and Batalla de Los Pinos promotions, address the entire body of generals and admirals, officers, non-commissioned officers and troops of the National Armed Forces to persuade them to take the correct decisions in this historical moment that the Fatherland is experiencing. (…) It’s time to make the right decisions in a historic moment (…) It’s clear that we have a new president elected”, say Javier and Juan Carlos in the video.
Upon learning of the video, Elon Musk shared it and said: “If this gains momentum, the legitimately elected president will replace the fraudster,” he said. However, information has emerged that raises doubts about the veracity of the captains' statements.
According to alerts from the social network X and sources such as Infobae and Foro Penal, the captains are no longer active. Juan Carlos Nieto Quintero, in particular, was mentioned as someone who had already been arrested and tortured by the Venezuelan government and was out of the country.
International reactions and Brazil's position
Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) announced Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections, but the Organization of American States (OAS) did not recognize the result.
In a report released on Tuesday (30), the OAS alleged that the electoral process was marked by significant irregularities, including delays in publishing results and allegations of vote distortion.
The OAS highlighted that the CNE, dominated by government allies, proclaimed Maduro the winner without providing detailed data to prove the result, generating doubts about the integrity of the electoral process. The report also mentioned reports of “illegalities, vices and bad practices”, with the Venezuelan government being accused of applying a repressive scheme to manipulate the electoral result.
Brazilian government reaction
In response to the crisis, the Brazilian government spoke out through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a note released on Monday (29), Brazil praised the “peaceful nature” of the election, but stated that it will only take a definitive position after the publication of the minutes with data from the voting tables.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva minimized the concerns, stating that there was “nothing serious” or “scary” in the elections. In a conversation with Maduro, former Chancellor Celso Amorim, a special advisor to the Presidency sent to monitor the vote, reinforced the request for the collection of minutes, and the government should only comment after an internal review.
“There’s a fight, how are you going to resolve this fight? Present the minutes. If there is doubt between the opposition and the situation in the minutes, the opposition files an appeal and will wait for the court to take the case. Then there will be the decision, which we have to accept. I am convinced that it is a normal, peaceful process”, said President Lula.
