Wintershall Dea concludes well the evaluation of the Bergknapp discovery with DNO partners Norge and Equinor, in field development in the strategic area.
Wintershall Dea and its partners DNO Norge and Equinor successfully completed the drilling of an appraisal well at the Bergknapp discovery in the Norwegian Sea. The team is already analyzing several field development options for discovery.
The discovery of Bergknapp is a significant achievement for the company, located in license PL836S, a strategic area for Wintershall Dea, Norway. Situated just eight kilometers west of the operated Maria field and 200 kilometers north of Kristiansund on the west coast of Norway, this discovery is positioned close to several other producing fields in the Norwegian Sea. The partnership is confident in the development potential of this discovery.

O assessment pit, completed by the platform Transocean Norge in early December, was undertaken with a view to minimizing volumetric and subsurface uncertainties at Bergknapp, including the underlying discovery at Åre formation.
- Green energy revolution: Biomethane replaces natural gas in sustainable ammonia production, reducing dependence on fossil fuels
- No soy or sugarcane! Brazil's largest exported product is oil, to the delight of Petrobras and other companies in the sector.
- From pre-salt to the largest gas reserve: Petrobras discovers 6 trillion cubic feet of gas in Colombia and leads global energy revolution
- The impressive numbers from the 10 oil platforms with the HIGHEST production in October: More than 2 million barrels per day in the spotlight in the pre-salt!
Focused exploration and successful strategy
In recent years, we have seen significant success with our strategy of exploring areas where we have in-depth subsurface knowledge and access to existing infrastructure. Such an exploration-focused strategy maximizes our chances of making commercial discoveries, while also reducing the time required for their development, he said. Michael Zechner, Managing Director of Wintershall Dea Norge.
The updated recoverable value and resource estimate for the discovery of oil in the Garn, Ile and Tilje formations is between 44 million and 75 million barrels of oil equivalent. While estimates for the underlying Åre Formation discovery are between six and 25 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Expansion and continued investment
The original discovery of oil at the Bergknapp prospect in 2020, followed by a gas discovery at Åre formation deeper during a successful re-entry and diversion in 2021, represents a significant milestone for Wintershall Dea. A operator, together with other partners, will continue to invest in new exploration and development opportunities in the strategic area.
Transocean Norge, under a long-term contract for Wintershall Dea and OMV, will now shift its focus to the PL211 CS license operated by Wintershall Dea. There, it will drill another appraisal well on the Adriana and Sabina discoveries.
We strongly believe in the potential of this area and will continue to leverage our existing position here to invest in new exploration and development opportunities, he said. Roy Davies, VP Exploration for Wintershall Dea Norge.
Wintershall Dea Norge: leadership in licenses and discoveries
Wintershall Dea is operator of the PL836S Bergknapp license with a 40% stake, while partners Equinor and DNO Norge each hold 30%.
