President Jair Bolsonaro declared, last Monday (6), that with the devaluation of Brent oil, Petrobras needs to lower the price charged for gasoline resale to consumers.
After stating that Petrobras would announce a decrease in the value of gasoline and other fuels this week - which caused the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) to open administrative proceedings against Petrobras -, the president of the republic, Jair Bolsonaro, said this Monday, December 6, that the amount charged to consumers for gasoline “has to fall” with the decrease in Brent oil prices on the global market.

Upon arriving at the Alvorada Palace on Monday, Bolsonaro declared to supporters “Do you need a crystal ball to say that the price of gasoline has to fall when Brent falls? If I'm not mistaken, almost US$ 10 off. It has to fall. I said that there, that's it, privileged information”, showing that he did not receive advance news regarding Petrobras' strategy for the gasoline price adjustment.
Brent oil, which is the international reference for gasoline price decisions by Petrobras, traded in London, closed today, December 7, at US$ 73,08 a barrel. A month ago, the most liquid futures contract for this raw material ended the session quoted at US$ 82,74. There was, then, in the period of one month, a decrease of US$ 9,66.

Concerned with the proximity of the 2022 elections and with the effect of inflation on his popularity with voters, President Jair Bolsonaro has assiduously criticized Petrobras' pricing policy, which bases the readjustments in the prices of gasoline and other fuels on the variation international oil value.
Earlier yesterday, Petrobras submitted a statement to the market to deny Bolsonaro's statement and also declared that it does not anticipate decisions regarding gasoline price adjustments. Even so, CVM started the process to investigate the company.
