The main electric cars that General Motors should invest in are SUVs

With the goal of expanding the offer of electric car models, General Motors (GM) announced that it will invest the amount of US$ 7 billion (approximately R$ 37 billion at current prices) in its zero emission car division. The automaker will prioritize pickup trucks and work vehicles, investing in developing its own batteries as a way to stand out in the new automotive market on the rise.

According to information published by the The New York Times, General Motors' energy cells will be manufactured at the Michigan plant. As for the Detroit headquarters, the company will allocate funds to manufacture the brand's new electric pickup trucks, such as the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra, not to mention the new models that are still in the development phase.

Electric cars only

From the new billionaire investment by General Motors, the goal of eliminating combustion cars from their production by 2035 is becoming closer and closer. Unlike Europe, the United States still does not have an assertive legislation about electric cars, however, the automaker is already investing in the project beforehand.

The focus of General Motors will be, initially, based on the main category purchased by the Americans: pickup trucks, which represent more than 40% of the market share. Added to this, the city of Michigan, which will receive the largest financial contributions, will have more than 4 direct jobs in its region, arising from GM investments.

Considering the recent clashes faced between General Motors and LG, investing in the development of its own batteries will be of great value to the automaker. Despite this, the Korean company continues to be responsible for the batteries of the Chevrolet Bolt, GM's main electric car today, and will collaborate with the implementation of improvements at the Michigan plant.

"Today, we are taking the next step in our continued work to establish GM's EV leadership by making investments in our vertically integrated battery manufacturing in the US and our EV manufacturing capabilities in North America," said Mary Barra, president and GM's executive director.

With the capital invested in the electric car project, General Motors will distribute funds among the factories for factory upgrades aimed at greater effectiveness, new body shops and paint shops, in addition to new general assembly and battery sectors and general upgrades of the plants.
