According to Gartner forecast, 6 million electric cars will be sold in 2022

According to the forecast of the consulting firm Gartner, around six million electric cars will be sold in 2022. During the United Nations Conference on Climate Change 2021 (COP26), which took place in November, the Council Zero Emission Vehicle Transition accepted the premise that car and other automobile manufacturers would commit to marketing only zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

This has put pressure on the automotive industry to prepare to decarbonize transport and encourage the use of electric cars, as “they are an important technology to help reduce CO² emissions in the transport sector”, as stated by Jonathan Davenport, Research Director at Gartner.

The director also added on the lack of chips that plagues the production of electric cars and will affect 2022, considering that “although shipments of vans and trucks are currently small, they will grow rapidly in companies as entrepreneurs identify new financial and environmental benefits in electrification of their fleets”, he quotes.

According to Gartner's expectation, electric cars will represent 95% of the total shipments of electric vehicles this year, while the remainder will be divided between buses, vans and heavy trucks.

Leaders in electric car production in 2022

Chinese vehicle makers will need to open factories and assembly lines to produce electric cars as the country has imposed a new mold on automakers, requiring electric cars to make up 40% of all sales by 2030.

Gartner estimates that 46% of worldwide electric car shipments in 2022 will come from China, making the country take the top position in the global shipping market, with a total of 2,9 million electric cars in 2022.

Western Europe, on the other hand, should occupy the second place in the ranking, producing about 1,9 million electric cars this year. The expectation is that North America will occupy the third position in shipments, with the production of 855,3 thousand electric cars in 2022.

“The European Unit's plans to reduce CO² emissions from cars by 55% and vans by 50% by 2030 are a catalyst for the uptake of electric vehicles in Europe,” states the Gartner analyst.

In addition to the new regulations and incentives provided by governments around the world to encourage the introduction of electric cars in the daily lives of countries, the automotive industry is also investing in companies that provide charging infrastructure and vehicle battery technology, the in order to support this transition. Gartner predicts that there will be approximately 2,1 million units of public electric car chargers in 2022
