The US National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) has taken decisive action in requiring the recall of approximately 67 million vehicles manufactured by the giants Hyundai, Kia, GM and others, due to concerns about supposedly faulty airbags. This action seeks to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers, after investigations point to a possible malfunction of airbag inflators.

ARC Automotive, the company responsible for manufacturing these airbags, disputed the allegations and refused to recognize the need for a recall. However, the NHTSA warned of the risk of overpressurization of the inflator, which could result in rupture and release of metal fragments into the passenger compartment. Sadly, one such incident resulted in a fatality in Canada in 2016. While ARC Automotive disputed the results, NHTSA continued to press the company, requiring it to prove the safety of the other 67 million inflators manufactured over the last 18 years.

General Motors (GM), aware of the importance of ensuring the safety of its customers, has already agreed to carry outecall of Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia models, totaling almost one million vehicles affected. GM's decision came after an incident in March in which a driver was injured in the face by a ruptured inflator. This action demonstrates the company's commitment to resolving the situation and protecting its customers.

It is critical that consumers are aware of recalls and take the necessary steps to ensure their own safety and that of their passengers.

While ARC Automotive refuses to acknowledge the need for a recall, it has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the NHTSA to assess and resolve the issue.
