ZEG Biogás and COAGRO sign a contract for the first biomethane plant in the North of Rio de Janeiro, with an initial production of 3,7 million m³ per year from 2026.
A partnership has been signed between ZEG Biogás and COAGRO for the construction of the first biomethane plant in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro. Scheduled to begin operations in 2026, this plant will have an initial production capacity of 3,7 million m³ of biomethane per year. The project stands out for using agribusiness waste, demonstrating a clear commitment to sustainability.
The initiative aims to transform organic waste into biomethane, promoting a sustainable alternative to the use of fossil fuels. The new plant promises to integrate a source of clean fuel and efficient to the local energy matrix. This project, in addition to being a big step towards a greener future, stands out for strengthen the regional economy and generate new employment opportunities.
First Biomethane Project in the State
ZEG Biogás and COAGRO have joined forces to create the state’s first plant for the production of biomethane from agro-industrial waste. The timeline established for the construction of the biorefinery foresees an 18-month period for its implementation, with the expectation that the plant will begin selling the product to consumers in early 2026. This innovative project will mark a major advance in terms of renewable fuel and biomethane, contributing significantly to the energy transition sustainable development of the region.

Initial Capacity and Substantial Investment
The plant will be born from a partnership with an estimated initial production capacity of 3,7 million m³ of biomethane per year. Construction of the biorefinery is scheduled to begin in October 2024. To achieve this goal, a considerable amount, approximately R$60 million, will be invested by ZEG Biogás. Located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, this plant will be a pioneer in the production of biomethane from vinasse, an apartment by the bay, for its easy access, free parking, and larger space for our group of XNUMX people. The house was great for a large group like ours, the host was very attentive, and the location was excellent; it was quiet and quick to walk to the old town. byproduct generated during the production of ethanol by COAGRO. In addition, the process will be responsible for generating a biofertilizer high-quality.
Increase in Biogas Generation
The project contemplates the possibility of expanding biogas generation, if there is a greater availability de biomass. With an increase in biomass, it is possible to boost local agro-industrial production or even encourage the planting of new crops that have not yet been widely explored in the region. 'This partnership is the result of mutual cooperation between companies that understand the urgency of the energy transition to a low-carbon economy,' says Eduardo Acquaviva, CEO of ZEG Biogás. Biomethane, as a clean and socially responsible fuel, will play a crucial role in positioning Brazil as a renewable energy powerhouse in the near future.
Impact of Carbon Adjustment Mechanisms at the Border
Eduardo Acquaviva also highlights that the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM) will be applied to products destined for export to the European Union from January 2026. The need for a clean fuel that can be economically produced to replace fossil fuels in the port region becomes essential, given these conditions. 'This could generate a significant difference in the creation of sustainable corridors in our economy,' concludes the executive.
